Associate Account/Contact Entities AFTER Import

(0) ShareShare

Using Dynamics CRM 2013 on-premise.  I'm new to Dynamics CRM.

I'm trying to associate Contacts with Accounts, both of which I've already imported.  I attempted to import both together (probably 20 different ways) and the best I was able to do was get the primary contact to show up in the Account.  All other Contacts do not appear to be in any way associated with an Account.

The data I imported was from 2 tables, Accounts and Contacts.  A foreign key AccountID in the Contacts table is the primary key in the Accounts table, and fk PrimaryContactID in the Accounts table is the pk in the Contacts table.  Account-Contact relationship is 1-Many.  Basically, it is maddeningly simple, hence my frustration with import/data-mapping not working.

Is there another way to tie Contacts to Accounts?  I haven't found any good info on how to use Connections, but that might be the way to go, maybe?

Did you get a chance to look at the below article ?

Yes, thank you Karth, I've seen both of those.  I receive no errors when importing.  All contacts and accounts are visible, and the primary contact is correctly assigned to an account.  But none of the contacts reference an account.  If I'm viewing a Contact, there is no Company Name.  If I'm viewing an Account, there is no list of Contacts except for the primary contact.

Unlike version 2011, version 2013 does not have a Parent Company field to map in Contacts, so I've been told to use Company Name.  However, I've tried at least 20 different combinations of fields in the Company Name lookup, none of which work.

When importing, Account.ID is mapped to "Account Number", and Contact.AccountID is mapped to a new field called "Legacy: Company ID".  So to me the -obvious- mapping would look like this:

    Company Name (Lookup):

Account: Related Record = Account Number
Contact: Related Record = Legacy: Company ID

Others Company Name (Lookup) values I've tried, in various combinations:

Account: Related Record = Account (Primary Key); Account Number (default)
Account: Related Record = Account (Primary Key); Account Name
Account: Related Record = Account Name
Account: Related Record = Account Name; Account Number
     Account (unchecked)

Contact: Related Record = Legacy: Contact ID
Contact: Related Record = Contact (Primary Key); Legacy: Company ID
Contact: Related Record = Contact (Primary Key); Full Name (default)
     Contact (unchecked)

So I'm asking again, is there a way to associate EXISTING Accounts and Contacts?  I can't believe that the only way to tie them together is doing a simultaneous import.

I don't know what happened to my earlier post, but I found an answer to this so I'm posting it again.

First, see the article that Karth mentioned in his reply.  But then you must know that it is impossible to do the combined import properly when there are multiple accounts with the same Account Name, no matter what other fields you try to combine in your lookup field to make it unique.

To work around this, In the Accounts file I added the Account Number (the primary key in my legacy system) to the Account Name field to make sure it was unique.  So if you have 2 different companies named "Krusty Burger", they must become "Krusty Burger #1234" and "Krusty Burger #9876".  Sorry, I know this won't be an option for some of you.  Then you have to use that same "Krusty Burger #1234" in the Company Name field of the Contacts file.
