MRP and raw material shortage

 Hello,

Just a newbie question. I'm currently playing around with the sample company, the Fabrikam Inc, generating forecast and executing the MRP. I found that for item CHAIR, the MRP is able to identify raw material shortages, which can be seen by the suggested orders created in the MRP Workbench window for item ARM, LEG (the raw materials of CHAIR). However, when I ran MRP for item WATCH, while it generates correctly the planned order released, gross requirement etc. for WATCH, it didn't generate suggested orders for the raw materials shortage. In other words, I can't see any amount for DISPLAY, BATTERY and other raw materials of WATCH although there's actually shortage for those raw materials.

I've tried to compare the BOM and Item card for WATCH and CHAIR and can't find the difference which explains why for one item, the MRP generates suggested orders for raw material shortages, while for the other it doesn't. In both cases, there are indeed raw material shortages.

How does the raw materials shortage being handled by MRP? Is it able to automatically generate MRP-Planned purchase orders for those raw materials?

Hope that somebody can shed some lights ...

PML

Have you checked the exclusion list?   Fabrikam isn't set to go for MRP.   You do need to check a few things and make sure MRP is set to calculate for the items.

I teamed up with another consultant to configure Manufacturing along with MRP for a company, I was in charge of doing the setups, but she was in charge about inventory.

Later on, I made the presentation/training for MRP, I guess I was not lucky enough to pick a FG setup in training, and when I ran MRP, it was suggesting the MO's but not the PO for the material shortages.

In other words I was calculating for the finished good but not for the BOM components, thats why I ended up in this thread, I then verified everything and I noticed that one particular SITE where the raw materials were assigned had the "Calculate MRP for this site" unchecked. Once I checked and rolled down the changes, I ran MRP and now its suggesting me MO's as for the made Items, as well PO's for the bought items.

In your case, if you have not figured it out yet, and for future community members looking for this info, make sure that the item/site is configured and that the site as well is included in MRP calculations
