Cannot find ContentPlaceHolder 'PlaceHolderTopHelpKey' ?

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

When trying to access some of the pages under Site Actions -> Site Settings -> "Business Portal Administration", for example users we see  "An Unexepected Error has occured Message" ...

The correlation ID says: System.Web.HttpException: Cannot find ContentPlaceHolder 'PlaceHolderTopHelpKey' in the master page '~masterurl/default.master', verify content control's ContentPlaceHolderID attribute in the content page.    at System.Web.UI.MasterPage.CreateMaster(TemplateControl owner, HttpContext context, VirtualPath masterPageFile, IDictionary contentTemplateCollection)     at System.Web.UI.Page.get_Master()     at System.Web.UI.Page.ApplyMasterPage()     at System.Web.UI.Page.PerformPreInit()     at System.Web.UI.Page.ProcessRequestMain(Boolean includeStagesBeforeAsyncPoint, Boolean includeStagesAfterAsyncPoint)

We did recently make a few adjustments to the master page but have since tried to roll these back..   Using SHarepoint Server Foundation 2010.

THanks in advance for your help-

    Hello,

Thanks for the update.   I am not sure about dynamics GP, but I know for dynamics SL business portal needs to stay at the 2010 functional level.   If you do have further questions, go ahead and submit something under the GP community forums and they should be better able to assist.

    Thanks!

I'm sorry.  We have Dynamics GP.  It is SharePoint Foundation.  The update took us from 2010 to 2013 function level.  No roll backs available so we just re-installed Business Portal.

Here are some questions to help narrow down the issue:

1 - You mentioned a sharepoint update.  Do you happen to know which one or what was clicked on?.

2 - Are you using SharePoint Foundation or SharePoint Server?

3 - What version of sharepoint and what version of SL are you using?

4 - What is the exact error you are currently seeing?

    Thanks,

Having a similar issue after clicking on a sharepoint update.  Is there a fix for this yet?  I don't have the changesitemasterpage option.

Initially I couldn't browse this page as it gave me error. Then I have installed latest service pack for SharePoint and after that I was able to go to this page.

However in site mater page, I can't see default.master page. it only shows businessportal.master and v4.master pages

    Can anyone please help?

    Thanks Blaine.

Can you please elaborate more on this on how to make those changes.

I have tried to do through SharePoint designer, but I didn't find any tag related to this. it shows DynamicMasterPageFile="~masterurl/default.master"

    Thanks for your help.

    That is good news.

For anyone else out there that would like to know how he did this, pleases read the following:

Browse to the following URL for Business Portal: http://<servername>:port#/BP/layouts/ChangeSiteMasterPage.aspx

Verify the following settings on this page:

    1. Site Master Page is set to 'default.master'

    2. System Master Page is set to 'BusinessPortalDefault.master'

    3. Alternate CSS URL is set to 'Use Windows SharePoint Services default styles'

If any changes are made, run an IISRESET and then re-launch Business Portal

All, this problem is solved...we had to re-add the correct master page back in and all is well.  Thank you!
