Product Prioritization based on Capacity

Posted on by 215

Hi

I have a client who produces a number of items, each given a different priority.

ie. Item A = priority 1 (highest priority), Item C = priority 3 (lowest priority)

Is there any way based on capacity that the customer can automatically produce Priority 1 items until a certain capacity % has been reached and then it will start producing Priority 2/3 items?

    Hi Claire,

I agree with Bron  ABC cant be used in MRP but end user can run a smartlist to see which order need to be produced first based on ABC code.

I'm pretty knowledgeable with GP Mfg, GP Capacity Planning and GP MRP - based upon your original question I would say 'No' there is no built in logic to GP Mfg that would meet your requirement.

I would also say 'No' - MRP will not treat an 'A' item differently than a 'B' item in ABC Item Codes.

However, Babu's suggestions would help the end user achieve the objective but giving end user a report or a query that would allow them to manually adjust production schedule and switching from high priority items to low priority items based upon units produced, quantity on hand or some other data condition.

But to be clear - your client's requirement is pretty lofty and would not be attainable in even the highest (more expensive) ERP programs.

In the world of software consulting workarounds are common and vital to successful implementations.

    Good Luck

    Hi Babu,

So I understand that Priority levels on MO's won't affect MRP but would Item ABC Codes be taken in to account in MRP instead?

    Hi,

You can use item options of ABC and using that you can prioritize the production.

    Inventory >> Cards >> Item >> Options

You can sort items into A, B, and C classifications. “A” items are the most important items in your inventory. They should be tightly controlled, with accurate records. “B” items might be less controlled, with good records, and “C” items might have minimal records with periodic review. If the on-hand quantities and usage of some items is zero or negative, an ABC code doesn't need to be assigned to them.

ABC analysis helps you group the type of information that the ABC analysis of items will be based on. You can group items using the following options in the ABC Analysis Options window.

The other options will be on manufacturing order level, using Priority field to prioritize the MOs.

Manufacturing >> Transactions >> Manufacturing Orders >> Entry

    Priority

Displays the priority of the manufacturing order—Low, Medium or High. Priority levels don’t affect Manufacturing scheduling processes, but they’re sometimes used as sorting and restricting options in reports.
