Configurator Or New Method To Bulk Data Import Creating Routings and BOMS

Hi All,

We installed BC cloud back in 2021 and at the time we went with a configurator product which allows us to setup the option choices, then load up an excel sheet by copying the option choices into excel, put the upload data into the sheet and then paste it into a bulk configurator. Which worked excellently until our product mix and process changed and we are now working from multi level BOMS's.

So we are now looking to see if there is a more suitable out of the box option, or, in the last few years has a more suitable system popped up.

To put it in perspective, we set parameters such as the material price, the number of bends, which machine the parts are going to be manufactured from and then add in the component details as a list. We could have 1 part ran 100 times on one job or 1000 one off bespoke parts. Each come with a routing and a BOM (built) each are created on the fly and within the almost 4 years we have ran the system, we have over 70,000 uniquely created parts, most of them used once and never used again. With this in mind, item by item manual creation wont work.

We now have a multi level bom structure needed. We have the customer place an order for a unit, say a P1, P1 is made up of 3 components A,B,C each produced through the production system, each we need to know is made. We need to produce the part, load onto a pallet, ship for subcon, return and subassemble. and put back onto a pallet and ship to the client. When we ship the P1, it needs to consume the A.B.C reference parts along with consumables in the system.

We also intend to plan and replan the orders, often a client will call to delay or accelerate the order (order can be for 100 parts) so we need to change the sequencing on the whole order not item by item replanning.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Out of the box you're really limited to creating everything manually. There are a few configurator apps in the app store for Business Central, perhaps there is one that matches your needs - Business Apps – Microsoft AppSource

Otherwise, if your partner is good with Business Central development, this would be a good use case to create something custom that fits your requirements.

in your case you need to set up the components and finished product all to make to order.
this way when you create a production order, BC will create a multiline production order.
You need to produce the item at the lowest level and make your way up. For example, produce A and B first, then make C, finally make XYZ as finished product.
You could also use phantom bom, This way you won't need to have the semi finished item in stock and just consume the parts to make a semi, then consume the semi product. There are videos about phantom bom on youtube for your reference.
