Multiple entity forms: should I use multiple Js files or one file for all forms

Hi,

I usually use one JS file for all the forms but when we are working with different business roles using different forms was wondering if it is easier to maintain different JS files for different forms.

Is there a recommended way?

I think this is a personal choice mostly.

If you have a lot of code for each form, you can separate it for ease, and for quicker response time, but I don't think it makes that much of a difference and not really necessary.

Hi, most dev's would recommend keeping everything in one file for re-use capabilities and avoiding re-work.

I have found large "utility" js files to be troublesome and very rarely unit tested.

This means someone else may "tweak" a piece of code in the single file to suite their needs and break everyone else's code.

I would copy the needed code to your own file and add it to the form,.

Quicker load and limited "tweak" based bugs.

Hi there.

It depends on personal preferences and/or a commitment in your company.

I prefer a JS file for general functions used on all forms... and a seperate JS file for each form for functions only used on specific forms.

It all depends on your choice however i have using single script for all forms in my organization and it depends how you are managing the functions within the script for e.g :

if (typeof (something) == "undefined") {

something= { __namespace: true };

}

something.Contact = {

onLoadForm1: function () {

if (formtype == formType.CREATE) {

function1();

}

else if (formtype == formType.UPDATE) {

}

else if (formtype == formType.READONLY) {

//empty condition

}

else if (formtype == formType.DISABLED) {

//empty condition

}

},

OnLoadFrom2: function () {

var formtype = Xrm.Page.ui.getFormType();

if (formtype == formType.CREATE) {

function1();

}

else if (formtype == formType.UPDATE) {

}

else if (formtype == formType.READONLY) {

//empty condition

}

else if (formtype == formType.DISABLED) {

//empty condition

}

},

function1: function () {

//logic goes here

}

so for e.g. if you need to call function 1 on form 1 you would say something.contact.onLoadForm1 and for form 2 something.contact.onLoadForm2.
