CRM 2015 eMail Router Upgrade or New Install

(0) ShareShare
ReportReport
Posted on by

Currently, we have CRM 2011 eMail router installed and I must say this router has worked very well over the last 4 years.  The CRM group is now in the process of upgrading the backend to CRM 2015.  We have also been using the Forward mailbox and have also not had any issues with this mailbox.

We do have a CRM development and production environment set up.

My question: would it be better to upgrade the CRM 2011 eMail router to CRM 2013 email router then to CRM 2015 email router if this can be done? or

Can a new server be built for the CRM 2015 email router and do a new install and configuration of the CRM 2015 email.

Thanks in Advance for any insight someone can provide.

    Hello,

You can go with any of the options given below. Look for the best option based on your environment and feasibility.

Option 1: Upgrade the CRM 2011 EMail Router to CRM 2013 EMail router then to CRM 2015 EMail router

    - Locate the following files in the folder <drive:>\Program Files\Microsoft CRM Email\Service\: Copy these files to a safe location.

    â—¦Microsoft.Crm.Tools.EmailAgent.Configuration.bin

    â—¦Microsoft.Crm.Tools.EmailAgent.SystemState.xml

    â—¦Microsoft.Crm.Tools.EmailAgent.xml

    â—¦Microsoft.Crm.Tools.Email.Management.config

    â—¦EncryptionKey.xml

    - Perform the upgrade to Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2015 Email Router.

Note: You may consider upgrading to CRM 2013 SP1 first and then to CRM 2015.

    PROS:

Your configuration settings from the previous installation have been retained. No need to configure anything.

    No Additional Hardware is required.

    CONS:

In case of Rollback, it may take a little time as you need to uninstall CRM 2015 Email Router and install CRM 2011. Replace the files from Backup.

Option 2: Build a New server for the CRM 2015 EMail router. Install and configure the CRM 2015 Email Router.

    - Need to Configure all the settings (Profiles, Forward Mailboxes) as you have configured in CRM 2011 Email Router.

    PROS:

Performing these tasks in advance can help minimize system downtime and ensure a successful upgrade.

Rollback time for Email Router is very less as you just need to disable CRM 2015 Email Router and enable CRM 2011 Email Router after the CRM Server is Rollback to CRM2011.

    CONS:

Additional Hardware is required (Unless you release the current CRM 2011 Email Router server).

Option 3: Instead of using the EMail Router, consider using server-side synchronization, which offers similar functionality and is easier to manage.

    - Server-Side Exchange Synchronization runs as part of the CRM Asynchronous Service and connects to the exchange web services.

    - Server-Side Synchronization provides management of mailboxes and allows you to disable inactive mailboxes with the Microsoft Dynamics CRM web application.

    - Switching from the Email Router is simplified by providing the capability to migrate Email Router incoming and outgoing profiles to Server Profiles for Server-Side Synchronization.

    - Server-Side Synchronization provides error logging and reporting within the Microsoft Dynamics CRM web application.

Note: Server-Side Exchange Synchronisation does not support Exchange 2007, however the email router does.

Hi Manoj, I hope this message finds you okay.

I have a question for you, I'm following this article technet.microsoft.com/.../hh699708%28v=crm.6%29.aspx because we are moving from a CRM router 2011 to a 2015 but in a cluster.

Since I never did this, I want to know if you can explain a little bit how will be the procedure, when you move from 1 server to other 2 in a cluster.

For me is not clear what to do with the files:

    â—¦Microsoft.Crm.Tools.EmailAgent.Configuration.bin

    â—¦Microsoft.Crm.Tools.EmailAgent.SystemState.xml

    â—¦Microsoft.Crm.Tools.EmailAgent.xml

    â—¦Microsoft.Crm.Tools.Email.Management.config

    â—¦EncryptionKey.xml

If I have to copy them from the old server to the "cluster shared folder" and replace them there and that's it? when I run the wizard it will recognize all the configuration?

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Rola,

The files listed are just for backup in case the upgrade doesn't succeed.  See technet.microsoft.com/.../dn531069(v=crm.7).aspx for details (specifically the section "To back up and use Email Router state files" and "If the upgrade fails").

    Thanks,
