Microsoft Dynamics CRM (Archived)

Seems like the future of CRM at Microsoft is changing majorly -- what is everyone doing to prepare? Just curious.

We're currently running Dynamic CRM v8 on prem, but with v9 being such a major change with the Unified Interface and now reading that Microsoft is shifting to .Net Core and dropping the .Net Framework, which CRM is heavily dependent on, I foresee MANY changes coming down the pipe in the next year or two.  We've been evaluating our upgrade to v9 as we tend to do upgrades about every two years, but I'm afraid this will be much more than a simple upgrade.

What is everyone else doing to prep for the changes that are sure to come?  Also are there any tech articles about this?  I'm already looking at possibly having to rebuild all our forms using the new Unified Interface layout, but I'm anxious to see the changes to Mobile since the Mobile experience with CRM v8 is dismal.  Also I'm betting we'll need to rewrite many to most of our plugins and workflows since most were written with SDK for CRM 2013 or 2015.  And heck it's not even CRM any more, it's Dynamics 365 for Customer Engagement.  I foresee us always calling it 'CRM' in house, even if Microsoft is trying to detach itself from the 'CRM' ecosystem.

Thanks for the feedback and conversation.

Plugins and workflows should continue to work fine without any changes provided they don't have any unsupported code.

JavaScript customization will definitely need to be reviewed and updated (Xrm.Page is getting deprecated).  Forms should be ok, though you will want to review and maybe reorg as desired.

You'll want to look into Model Driven Apps which can be leveraged to provide more tailored UI experiences (via a specific url) which is very handy for users who don't want to have a bunch of menus / views etc cluttering up their interface if they have very specific entities / tasks they perform.

The rate of change is likely to accelerate though mainly for the online version.  Feels like the onprem version is getting less and less attention / new features since many of them require Azure / Online features.

The UCI forms are faster in general as well which is nice.

if you are switching from v8 onprem to v9 still onprem you can do it and keep the classic interface if you want, and all the supported javascript (using Xrm.Page) will still work on v9 onprem (but as Daryl wrote they are now deprecated)

a different thing is if you plan to switch from onprem to online, that is another story as you don't have the full control of the updates timeline so you need to make sure your customizations are fully supported and pay attention to deprecation announcements.

Regarding .net core/.net framework I suggest to don't overthink, few days ago at Build they announced .net 5, they are practically merging and making a single .net framework for the future, but this will not affect dynamics in the short period

regarding 'CRM', most of the people still calling it dynamics crm sometimes, including myself.
