Implementation of process manufacturing - how to manage BOMS of finished goods containing Formulas with multi level phantoms....

Posted on by 5

Hello Everybody,

Quite new in ERP and 365 world.

Part of a project team to implement 365 FO

Looking at manufacturing requirements...

I'll try to describe the situation but please be kind as it is already not clear for me....

We are producing finished products. (FP1)

Those products got a BOM composed of Raw materials and formulas (for example a blend that will be used to produce a product and some labels as raw materials to finalize it.

So we produce batches of blends but we cannot stock them (blend is liquid and on specific temperature so we use it directly to produce the finished products).

Within the blend formula, there are multiple choices that can be made and at different levels (i guess this is the part were phantoms items invite themselves in the solution ;-) ) but without interdependences.

Those choices aren't made at sales order level but only when production plant people start planning work orders.

I was used in another ERP to see a configurator at Sales Order level that will directly create orders and specific parts list and routes. But here I don't know how to provide production people such a functionality.

So first question will be: is there a way to have a configurator at production order level? Yes/no? Can someone be kind enough to give me some light on this issue?

I am of course already thankful for your time reading this question and will be please to give you more information if I can!! ;-)

Regards,

Fab.

    Thanks a lot ColbyGallagher !

I'm diving into documentation (not sure I'll see the surface soon) .

    Again, thank you!

Welcome to a fun journey.  A couple things:

1.) Product configurator for constraint based product masters only works with items that have a production type of BOM, you can't use configurator against any formulas.

2.) Formulas allow formula lines to have a a "Plan group" and "Priority" field, that allows the planning engine to use ingredient B if ingredient A is not available.  There is also functionality for batch balancing using Active / Compensating / Filler ingredients.

3.) I would hope you consider stocking the batch of blend into inventory, even if only in a logical location (Tank1, Tank2, Tank3, etc) as it allows you a few things:

a.) You can track batch attributes of this bulk item, and optionally allow the finished goods to inherit these batch attribute values, which can be useful in sales / quality processes.

b.) This allows you a spot where you can blend off specific batches if needed.

c.) This better aligns with most process manufacturing. Yield in batching is usually much different than in filling part of the process.

I would suggest reading up on Packed and Bulk products functionality from process manufacturing. You can find a good bit here: docs.microsoft.com/.../working-with-batch-orders-and-consolidated-batch-orders and note you do not have to use consolidated batch orders to use Packed / bulk products.

And any of the 2012 R3 documentation you find is probably still relevant, not much has changed at the core in D365.

I am sorry that I don't know of any functionality, but I'll give it a shot to give you some ideas.  There are third-party configurator products you can buy, but you have to ask precise questions to understand how they work.  We went through some heavy customizations to work to put sales orders in the system.  We use the configurator connected to AX 2012, so we don't know if they have one for D365.

I think I read in your situation, you have a certain amount of raw materials (liquid), and you have to produce enough of your FG or Sub Assembly to consume the entire amount? If that is correct, you might be able to use the Max Report as Finished under the Engineering tab of the released products.  As I understand that functionality, it looks at all of your raw material on hand and tells you how much you can make.

If you don't physically have the inventory but have it at a vendor, you could set up a vendor warehouse to consume the inventory on your bom/formula.  Then just receive in the inventory you have purchased.

Not sure that is in the right direction but it is my best suggestion.
