Word document template display only month and year

I am generating a document template using the three dots on the ribbon and going to Word Templates. I have a date-only field and it displays as dd/MM/yyyy, but I would like only the month and year (MM/yyyy). I have tried using DATE <fieldname> \@ "MM/yyyy" but it still shows with the day part as well. Is there any way to do this in the template itself, or is a separate field needed to only hold the month and year?
