Assembly Orders with SKU and Transfer Orders

I have the following question.

I have a company that has 3 storage locations. The sales orders are always supplied from storage location 1 or 2. However, the assembly orders are assembled at location 3 and stored temporarily there.

I have now created 3 sales orders in my test environment that trigger a need for an article. Storage location 1 or storage location 2 is entered in the sales order lines.

I have generated a SKU for each storage location. Warehouse 1 and warehouse 2 have the replanishment system "transfer". Storage location 3 is covered by the assembly.

Afterwards I created an order planning. This shows me the requirements from the sales orders and it is suggested that transfer orders must be created. So I created my transfer orders.

However, I do not get any suggestions for the creation of assembly orders to cover the requirements in storage location 3. Storage location 1 and storage location 2 are supplied by transfer from storage location 3. However, no assembly requirement is created for storage location 3.

How can I ensure that the demand at storage location 3 is covered by assembly orders so that after the assembly orders have been completed, I can carry out the transfers to storage location 1 and storage location 2.

    Hi

Can you please check SKU for Location 3 and see if you selected Assemble to Stock or Assemble to Order for Assembly Policy? Make sure to select Assemble to Order.  Also what do you have for Replenishment System? is it Assembly?

    Thanks

    Hi,

I checked the SKU and changed it to Assemble to Order. As replenishment system assembly is set. But all I get is the transfer orders. But no automatic generated assembly orders.

    Any idea?

    Hi

I replicate the same scenario and my planning worksheet recommended assembly order for loc3. I write my setup and step here to see if it matches yours

SKU in Loc 1 and Loc 2 setup:

    Replenishment System = Transfer

Transfer-from Code = Loc 3 (Transfer Route has OWN Logic and In Transit)

    Reordering Policy = Order

    SKU in Loc 3:

    Replenishment System = Assembly

Assembly Policy = Assm to order

    Reordering Policy = Order

Then when I run planning worksheet I selected the following setup then made sure to select all 3 locations. Hence, planning worksheet required bot Transfer and Assembly orders

    Hi,

that is exactly what I want. I can reproduce your scenario.

The problem in my environment was that I used the order planning worksheet. In this planning worksheet no assembly orders are taken into account. Also i forgot to fill the "reorder policy".

When using the planning worksheet as mentioned in your example everything works as expected. Great and many thanks for your help!

As a side note for anyone reading this in the future, do not use Order Planning.  I could tell you the whys, but don't want to bog this topic down.  The Req. Worksheet (Essentials) or Planning Worksheet (Premium) are the better options.

    Hi Ben,

thanks for your advise. It was the first try to use order planning and I guess it would be the last time, for sure.

    Answer is verified.

Regards and have a nice weekend.

Ben Baxter   Thanks for info. I heard about not using Order Planning before but I still do not know why. If you can share the why it can help me a lot. Thanks

I agree with MahGah. It would be very interesting to know why order planning should not be used. Thanks.

MahGah I couldn't find a way to send a private message, so here goes:

Order Planning offers zero flexibility into the Replenishment process.  It forces every source of Demand into an Order policy, regardless of what is setup on the Item.  If you don't want to accept the results of the Order Planning, it is rather tedious to delete each suggestion.  I can't remember, but I don't think it goes down in levels, meaning sub-component demand wouldn't be factored in until the top level was created.

Since other options (Req. and Planning Worksheets) exist and offer far more flexibility in the Replenishment Process, they should be utilized.  Even if you are in a pure Order environment, it is still recommended to use either of the available Worksheets over the Order Planning process.  This way you have the options to expand your replenishment choices without learning a new process.

If you are a Premium BC environment, the Planning Worksheet is the best option.  If you are an Essential BC environment, the Req. Worksheet is the best option, since the Planning Worksheet is not available.

    Hi Ben

Thank you. I finally learned why I should not use Order Planning. Thanks again for all the information.
