R2 Direct Delivery

Hello,

We are using AX 2012 R2 and WAX for Direct Deliveries but when posting the product receipt, it requires a warehouse location and never let's us finish if we don't assign one. This resulted in using one location for many items and sometimes the same item. This causes issues when it assigns the reservation to the wrong Sales Order from the Purchase order product receipt if there are multiple like-items assigned to the same location in the same warehouse.

Using base AX is there a best practice of how warehouses and/or Direct Deliveries should be set up as to not require a Location so we do not have to use a location, or should we be using a virtual Warehouse that doesn't require a Location to be assigned?

Thanks for any assistance.

Kwelty

    Hi Kwelty,

There is not one best-practice scenario (or as I like to put it: If everyone uses best practice, it's really just average practice).

First of all you'll need to define receipt locations.

If your items are on fixed locations in your warehouse, then you can set the default receipt location per item (item warehouse settings) to it's pick location. That way all inbound items are automatically posted to their final destiny.

Alternatively or if you don't have fixed locations, you can define a default receipt location on the warehouse level (inv. breakdown > warehouse setup). All incoming items will arrive there and then you'll have to transfer them to their final destinations.

If this interferes with your reservation tactics then you could consider using a separate warehouse as your default receipt location.

Whatever you choose, without a default receipt location you'll have to enter your favorite drop spot every single time, which sounds like what you have going now.

I'm not sure exactly how WAX worked in R2, but one idea might be to use a virtual non-WAX enabled warehouse for your Direct delivery sales. It should be possible to use a Warehouse with a single Default Receipt and Default Issue location. This should ensure that AX will set a location on the Purchase order line.

As suggested default locations are the way to go for direct deliveries. Both our source warehouses and target warehouses in different companies use location "1" as the default for receiving and shipping. This is especially needed for direct deliveries in multi company since it is a three way transaction. We also do not do reservations because we are heavily serialized and you normally want to ship the most easily accessed inventory.

    Hi Kwelty,

Normally the selling company uses virtual non WAX warehouse to do sales to final customer in case of direct deliveries. The default receipt location is setup on this warehouse which is used automatically on the purchase order.

As the inter company sales order will be shipped the product receipt will be posted automatically without any error as it is a direct delivery.

To answer you last you need location as the storage dimension of the item on the selling company has location enabled.

You can make an item which does not need location in the selling company and needs all the dimension in the shipping company. In this way the original sales order and purchase order will not ask for a location while product receipt posting in case of direct delivery in the selling company.

You should a virtual warehouse signifying the shipping company and setup items storage dimension group which does not need a location and in this case you will have direct deliveries without location in selling company.
