Alert function within html webresource using Outlook Client

Using CRM 2016 on premise version 8.0.1.97

We have an area of code whereby when user clicks an approve button a popup displays (html web resource).  When user clicks ok it checks for things on the record and if something is wrong a simple alert is displayed to the user advising what needs to be fixed.  This works fine in IE but using Outlook client the actual alert results in an 'alert' is null or undefined'.  Have tried the open alert dialog etc and always get the same problem.
