Can Great Plains 9.0 SP2 work in a virtual environment. The IT dept is moving in that direction and before they make a move to even test this I want to find out if its possible.

DEFINATELY create a test environment before committing to a virtual environment. I have walked into several shops with significant response time issues that were running on various different virtual environments.
We've being running all versions of GP in Microsft Virtual PC for a couple of years without any issues. But this doesn't mean Microsoft will support it. It's all down to risk management.
I have a client also considering running GP9 in a VMware environment. They have 60 GP users located in 7 locations in US, Europe and Asia. Has anyone successfully implemented this environement successfully.
Thanks.
Susan
Hi,
I'm considering running our GP10 production server on VMware (vSphere). We have 144 users working hard at all times throughout the day. We also run SQL Reporting Services and pull from the production server for all reports that need up to the minute data.
I'd be interested to hear from anyone else that is running GP10 virtualized with a similar environment.
Regards,
Terry
Hi Mark,
I'm very interested in you running 9 on VMWare. I have my first two virtualisation projects coming up. Do you guys use eConnect or Business portal? If so:
If you can help, thanks. If not, no hassle.
Ian.
We've successfully run GP 9 on VMWare. It's not supported but it runs fine. Use a test environment first of course.
Mark
Hi Michael,
As far as I know its not supported. MSSQL would be though..you could have client machines running GP and connecting to SQL running on a virtual server. (in fact you colud probably have GP 6 running locally connecting to mssql virtual)
V10 is supported though (but just on MS virtual technologies). Speaking to people at convergence MSSQL runs fine on VMWare.
Support for V10 extends to:
Hardware Virtualization
Microsoft Virtual PC
Microsoft Virtual Server
Microsoft Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V
Software Virtualization
Microsoft SoftGrid 4.2
We are starting two virtual server projects soon. Both will involve GP, BP, econnect etc. Both will be at version 10. One on VMWare, one on MS Virtual Server / HyperV.
I'd be interested in your experiences / findings / results of testing etc.If you want to share and bounce ideas off each other, email me.
Best regards,
