Dynamics CRM 2016 IFD Internal URL

Hi everyone

I have just setup an internet-facing deployment for Dynamics CRM 2016 and everything is working internally and externally.  However, I have got some questions regarding the fact that there are separate URLs for internal and external access.  Currently we have the following URLs setup:

Internal URL: crm.domain.com

External URL: orgname.domain.com

The internal and external domains are the same.

We have been using on-premise CRM for a few years and the URL has always been crm.domain.com so ideally we now want this URL to be used for both internal and external users, to avoid any confusion.  I have found some how-to articles on how to use the external URL for both but nothing on how to use the internal URL externally as well as internally.

I've tried creating an external CNAME record of crm.domain.com which points to orgname.domain.com but this doesn't work.  It pushes the external user to our AFDS page but there's an error, which on the ADFS server states Requested Authentication Method is not supported on the STS.

We also use the CRM for Outlook add-in, so I'm not sure how this works if we're forced to use 2 separate URLs as our staff work in and out of our network?

I'd be really grateful if someone could let me know if what I want to do is possible?  If not I'd be interested to hear from anyone who's gone though this before and how they've managed to get around any issues relating to separate URLs, especially with the Outlook add-in.

Thanks in advance.

Quick update.  We have come to the decision that we can use our external URL internally and externally.  We've got this setup and working by using the a redirect rule in the web.config file on our Dynamics server.  We now use the external URL internally and this automatically redirects to our internal Dynamics server, so we only have to use one URL internally and externally.

When using Chrome to browse to this internally the user is presented with the CRM site without having to enter any credentials.  For some reason though, if I use Internet Explorer it presents our ADFS sign-in page and you have to enter a username and password, which then takes the user to CRM.  Does anyone know why this would only be happening in Internet Explorer as we really want all internal users to be able to login automatically.  Our main browser is IE so I need to replicate the Chrome behavior in IE.

Any pointers would be gratefully received.

The automatic login behaviour in IE is controlled via the security settings. If you have this set to 'Auto login only in local Intranet zone', then add both the CRM url and the ADFS url to the local Intranet Zone in IE.

You may also need to check the authentication settings in ADFS; for automatic login you may need this set to Windows Authentication, and not Forms Authentication

Hi David, thanks for the reply.  Our ADFS and CRM server URLs are both in the local intranet zone.  We also use ADFS for Office 365 and this always automatically signs the user in.  Also, after logging out opening the CRM address in Chrome again prompts for credentials from ADFS so it seems like the credentials are only saved until the browser is closed.

I'm not sure why our CRM instance is different.  The only thing I can assume is that because I connect to the external CRM URL (which is then redirected to internal when inside our network) ADFS thinks I'm external and presents the form-based authentication?  Is there a way around this as I can't enable Windows authentication externally on our ADFS server (we're using Server 2016).
