X++ project cannot be built. Another build is in progress.

Hi,

On recently set up F&O VMs, the following error has been occurring for a few days in “Build Solution”/“Build Models”: “X++ project cannot be built. Another build is in progress.”

What I have already done/checked:
  • Cleared the Visual Studio cache
  • Restarted the complete IIS
  • rebooted the VM
  • set number of maximum parallel project build to 1
  • Installed the latest D356 extension
Unfortunately I don't know what to do and I can't find a solution in other forums. Also the Microsoft Copilot does not show anything interesting.
What I have also noticed are the two error messages in the Windows Event Viewer that appear parallel to the build error. I have attached the two errors in the attachment. However, I don't know whether they are directly related or just a follow-up error.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Best regards

I've seen this error once and I there indeed was another build running . I forgot that I'm compiling something through command line and tried to build a model in Visual Studio.

Things like restarting IIS won't help you, because IIS is used later in the process to run the compiled application. What you should focus on instead is xppc.exe. When you check running processes, don't you see xppc.exe there? What if you kill it and try a build again?

    Hi Martin,

    thank you for your feedback!

I have checked the Task Manager. There is no process called “Xpp.exe”. However, there is a process “xppcAgent.17.0” running in the same location as the application Xpp. Unfortunately, terminating the process does not help. It keeps opening again and again. I even removed it from the folder as a test so that it could not start at all, but this caused the build process to terminate immediately and generate the error message directly.

    Any other ideas?

You're right, it may be xppc.Agent or xppc.Agent.17.0 too, not just xppc.

The agent is what VS is using. In my case, it doesn't start automatically when I kill it, until I start another build. If you kill it and it immediallly starts again without you trying to run a build, then there seem to be another process doing that. In that case, I would check whether it starts under your user account and whether it happens with closed VS too.

I have tested the starting behavior. It is the same as yours. It does not start without starting a new build.

If the process is the same as yours, then it cant be the cause? Or am i missing something?

Any luck on this issue ? After updating my VM to 10.0.45 I am having the same issue but no one in this world seems to have solved yet ;)
