What should happen to my email when using server-side sync

Hi

Can someone please clarify what should happen to my email when using server-side sync?

I have my own expectations which appear to be wrong.  Documentation is not clear and appears mis-leading.  Microsoft support have given conflicting information.

We are using CRM Online 2016.  We have not upgraded to Dynamics 365 yet.  We are using Exchange Online from the same O365 tenant.  I use Outlook 2016.  I have a test contact in CRM with a valid GMAIL address.  My user is configured to use Server-Side Sync and has been approved and enabled.  I do not have CRM for Outlook installed.  My personal settings are set to track all messages.

  1. Outgoing - If I send an email from Outlook to my test contact, should the email appear in CRM against my test contact?
  2. Incoming - If I send an email from gmail from my test contact, should the email appear in CRM against my test contact?
  3. Replying Outgoing - If I reply to an email in Outlook, should the email appear in CRM against my test contact?
  4. Replying Incoming - If I reply to an email in gmail, should the email appear in CRM against my test contact?

If the answer to the above is no, what do I need to do so I can use Outlook to send and receive email and automatically sync them to CRM?

    Thanks for the reply.

I'm familiar with how Microsoft for Outlook works.  I have chosen not to use it as it has a negative impact on performance.  The only reason why I would use it is to automatically sync incoming and outgoing mail.

My concern is that server-side sync should be syncing email much like the email router used to, however this appears to not be the case.

By the way the link you sent doesn't work and is for CRM 2011.

RE: What should happen to my email when using server-side sync

Outgoing - If I send an email from Outlook to my test contact, should the email appear in CRM against my test contact?

    No

Incoming - If I send an email from gmail from my test contact, should the email appear in CRM against my test contact?

    No

Replying Outgoing - If I reply to an email in Outlook, should the email appear in CRM against my test contact?

Yes(if reply is to the email originating from CRM)

Replying Incoming - If I reply to an email in gmail, should the email appear in CRM against my test contact?

Yes(if reply is to the email originating from CRM)

    However, these are configurable.

"When you use Microsoft Dynamics CRM for Outlook, all the e-mail you receive arrives in your Outlook Inbox. Only e-mail messages that originated as a Microsoft Dynamics CRM e-mail activity (that is, a response to e-mail message you send from Microsoft Dynamics CRM) or that is marked as tracked in Microsoft Dynamics CRM, arrives in the Microsoft Dynamics CRM Activities and My Work: Queues area. If you prefer, you can:

Track all incoming e-mail messages as Microsoft Dynamics CRM e-mail activities.

Track only e-mail messages that originated in Microsoft Dynamics CRM (that is, e-mail sent in response to a Microsoft Dynamics CRM e-mail activity) into Microsoft Dynamics CRM e-mail activities.

Track only e-mail messages related to your accounts, contacts, or leads.

Track e-mail messages related to all Microsoft Dynamics CRM and custom record types that contain an e-mail field."

    Please read :

    download.microsoft.com/.../Microsoft_Dynamics_CRM_2011_User&;s_Guide.doc

You can go to "Managing E-mail Activities" section, it details out everything you need to know.

    Thanks,
