Workflow and AIF batch job recurrence interval

(0) ShareShare

We have a number of recurring batch jobs for workflow and AIF but the nightly Commvault backups are causing one or some of these jobs to become stuck in a state of Executing or Withhold. It then takes a sys admin to clear these and restart them.

In this article https://community.dynamics.com/ax/b/timsaxblog/archive/2016/03/08/dynamics-ax-batch-job-recurrence-hurry-up-and-wait article the author suggests that a repeat interval of 10-minutes is recommended because of the way that batch job processing works.

I am interested to know what others use?

I've tested in our test environment and it works as you've described.

I'll apply to our production environment for the real test.

    Thanks you're a star.

Yep, so lets say that you have 2 AOS's: AOS1 and AOS2.

    • Set AOS1 as batch and set schedule as default to process jobs 24h\7.
    • Set AOS2 as batch and set 2 records in schedule to exclude 11pm-12pm interval.
    • Create new batch group "WF". You already have one that has blank name.
    • Assign batch group with blank name to AOS1, all batch jobs by default have blank batch group so they will be executed 24\7.
    • Assign "WF" batch group to AOS2. So all batches that have this group won't be executed in 11pm-12pm interval.
    • Assign WF batch job (or any other you want) to "WF" batch group to stop them executing from 11 to 12pm.

    Hope this helps.

One of our 4 AOSs is setup for processing batch jobs. Is it a matter of creating 2 records under server configuration, one to run from midnight to 10pm and the second to run from 11pm to midnight?

How many AOS's you have ? How many of them are batch servers ?

Well as you know we have problems with Commvault backups interfering with the AX batch jobs so I am looking at changing the batch jobs to have an exclusion window during which the Commvault job runs. This includes the workflow set of batch jobs which doesn't ask for start and end dates and times.

If you can help with setting these batch jobs to run 24/7 with the exception of a small window in the evening, say 10-11pm, that would be most appreciated.

    Hi AXatak,

You can have multiple batch groups. If you have more than 1 AOS you can assign different batch groups to different AOSs. Each AOS can have it's own schedule, so playing with AOS batch groups and schedules you can exclude WF and AIF from overnights runs.

Please read this blog post organicax.com/.../batch-processing-in-dynamics-ax to get additional details about batches, groups and AOS schedule.

    Hi ievgen,

True we don't need these batch jobs to be running 24/7 but is it possible to run workflow and AIF batch jobs under a batch group?

    EDIT:

... under a batch group with an exclusion window?
