Extra Sandbox in a same Domain?

Hi,

Question first, it there a way to add another sandbox to the same domain?
Or do I need to use with another domain account?

I just joined a small company as a BC developer and I'm the second one, so it used to be managed by a single person who is my boss.
Our company has 1 production and 3 sandboxes just like the others.
Sandboxes are used for Dev, Test, and backup.
It is how it's been used by my boss.
We have 2 kinds of licenses for developers that we have, Premium and Partner Sandbox.

Now the problem is, The Dev Sandbox environment was fully used by my boss.
The DEV sandbox has been used by my boss alone and I don't want to make a scenario that I ruined her codes that we overwrite each other.
So I do not have a place to test my codes "on the existing extensions".
I was trying to open a trial license but seems it doesn't work when I already have a premium license, it throws error.
And nowadays personal account cannot open a trial license, must be a work account....
Does anyone have a way to have more testing environment?
It is ridiculous to have only 3 environments while there are more than 2 developers.
Or is there a way to establish my own free testing on-premises server that doesn't go production?

I have the same question (0)

    Hello,

If you're on Business Central SaaS (Cloud):

Default limit: Each Business Central environment typically allows 3 sandboxes and 1 production.

But: You can request more sandboxes from Microsoft through a support ticket, especially if you’re a partner or paying customer.

    How to do it:

    • Go to Admin Center
    • Open a support request → Justify that you have multiple devs and need isolated testing.

Usually, Microsoft is lenient for partners and grants extra sandboxes if reasonably explained.

    Hello,

Yes, in Business Central, each tenant (domain) is limited to 1 production and up to 3 sandbox environments. To get more sandboxes under the same domain, you'd need to delete and recreate sandboxes as needed, or purchase additional capacity via a support request to Microsoft. Alternatively, you can set up a free local on-premises test environment which works well for development and testing without impacting the cloud tenant. This is a common workaround for developers needing isolated environments.

Hope this answer will help you!

    Hey
Sounds like you’ve landed in a classic small-team setup where legacy workflows meet scaling pains. Let’s break this down and explore your options for getting a safe, isolated testing environment without stepping on your boss’s code.

Option 1: Create a New Sandbox in the Same Domain

    • Yes, you can add another sandbox to the same domain if your license and tenant capacity allow it.

    • However, Business Central SaaS limits you to 3 sandboxes per tenant unless you purchase additional environments.
    • You don’t need a separate domain account, but you might need admin rights or CSP access to create new environments.
    • If you're using a Partner license, you may be able to request additional sandboxes through your CSP provider.

🧰 Option 2: Use a Trial Environment (with caveats)

    • Trial environments are tied to work accounts, not personal ones.
    • If your domain already has a Premium license, creating a trial under the same tenant won’t work—it throws errors, as you’ve seen.
    • You could try creating a test customer tenant via Partner Center and spin up a 30-day trial with 25 Premium licenses.
    • This gives you a clean slate to test without affecting your company’s production or sandbox environments.

    •

🖥️ Option 3: Set Up a Free On-Premises Testing Server

This might be your best bet for full control and zero interference.

    • You can install Business Central On-Premises locally using the DVD image or Docker container.
    • With a demo license, you’ll get access to Cronus data and full functionality for testing.
    • You’ll need:
      Windows Server or a VM
      • SQL Server Express (for the database)
        Business Central installation file
