Risk Assessment GP 9.0

Posted on by 30

We are currently using GP 9.0 (happily), our organization needs a substantial infrastructure upgrade which we have budgeted to work through in 2013. We want tot stay on GP 9.0 acknowledging it is "unsupported" by Microsoft. I am trying to get a feel for what kind of risk we are  exposing ourselves to by waiting until 2014 or 2015 and upgrading to GP 2013 at that time.

Right now we have had quotes on upgrading to GP 10 when we upgrade our servers and desktops (unsupported as well) so that does not make sense to me. It doesn't remove the risk because it is unsupported as well. The cost of 10-17K for that upgrade makes no sense, we prefer to stick with what we have and move to 2013 as per the above schedule.

We see that is a way to maiximize our investment........anyone care to weigh in on this?

Another componenet will be when you replace servers\clients.    GP 9.0 may not be able to be installed on some of the new clients (if you have GP installed on individual clients).   This would be important if you were doing a rolling upgrade of workstations (not upgrade everyone on the same day).      Something else you will want to plan for is your upgrade will be mult-step since there is no direct upgrade to GP2013 from GP 9.0.     You will also need to have a little bit more training with Management Reporter since when you upgrade Frx will go away (assuming you are using ledger).

    Hope this helps

Kent, you ask a great question.  Your risk is dependant on a number of factors.  Off the top of my head,

    1. Do you have a knowledgeable, competent GP Admin person with SQL skills?

    2. Do you haved a good MSFT partner who can continue to support you when your inhouse people run into roadblocks?

    3. I assume you're not using GP payroll if you're still on 9.0 . . .

    4. Do you have solid maintenance & recovery plans in place?

    5. How many 3rd-party apps do you have and can you rely on those continuing to work?

There are many more factors to consider, but these in my mind are critical in determining the risk in staying on your current GP version.  I know companies still on 7.5 and while they have to deal with the occasional glitch, they're still using the system effectively because they have good support people they can call on.

    Hope this helps,
