Reporting on Inventory transactions

Posted on by 3,055

Our organization has had a lot of changes in upper management and they are requesting reports based on data which I do not believe is easy to combine/compile.  Management believes there should be an easy and low cost way of providing the reports.  I have tried to explain the reporting capabilities (or lack thereof for their requests) and they requested that I do some research.

We use manufacturing and have Horizons Light Manufacturing connected to GP.

Does someone have a way to get data which combines GP transactions with Horizon transactions and can view SOP and POP with inventory and Horizons?  We do have Smartlist, but we cannot get all the data needed in a common format in order to provide the reports requested.

Here are examples of the questions being asked:

1) HMS Costed BOM VS Actual Costed BOM with lot size by location

2) breakdown of each component tagged to what % of annually spend it is associated with

3) Margins by item number and/or lot number and see allocation/destination of each shipment

4) Analysis of where we should be producing each product line

5) Breakdown of a specific sale (by just one transaction or over a period of time specified) showing the BOM cost (so, GP will provide the finished goods cost, but they want to know what was the individual component actual costs for that sale or sales).which includes yield gain/loss.

The above are just a few of the requests, I would appreciate responses on if there are easy and low cost methods (less than a couple of thousand dollars).  If you believe this is not possible, please voice those too.  Thanks for everyone's input.

Best regards,

Dale

    Frank and Dan,

I appreciate you input on this matter. My assumption was always that there is nothing to support management's requirements at the price point they want to spend, but I wanted to at least ask the community what is the best option(s).

    Best regards,

    Dale

I am not sure of the cost of Smartlist Builder, but that combined with the smartlists Horizon's provides, should get you the raw data to build much of the 5.   Also, what valuation do you use?   I am guessing standard?   Other than that, I agree with Frank in that SSRS is a good way to go, but developing those reports will take some time (and $),

The only realistic solution for such reports would be to use SSRS (SQL Server Reporting Services) or Crystal Reports.  You already own SSRS by virtue of the fact you're using a SQL database with GP.  Crystal is a minor expenditure.  However, if you want someone else to do the report development for you, you'll be hard pressed to have that much report development done for less than $2k.  In fact, it might be tough to have it done for less than $5-$10k.
