Move to a different vendor package from Dynamics, in this instance taxation

We are considering changing from our CCH taxation package to a new one to be chosen sometime this year. I have not found any explicit documentation for this process. 

From what I have seen most of these enhanced apps are installed in the var or isv layer and the changes are in both the database fields and code. 

Does anyone have suggestions?  Or has anyone done this and has experience good or bad to share?
