if I had to sell boxes of cookies, I'd need formulas for the cookies (i have co products and by products plus scaling ingredients), but my box of cookies is the cookies plus packaging materials. Would I create a BOM for the Box of cookies and have one of the lines be a sub-assembly for the cookie, that uses a formula?
Hi @Grang, this is a very old thread, you might want to start a new one with your own question.
With a BOM, you can build a configured BOM or route on the fly based on user selection of product dimensions. You can't do that with Formula. That's the most significant reason to select BOM's over formulas in my opinion. Secondary reason would be the Consumption calculation on BOM's vs. Formula's:
On BOM lines, consumption calculation formula can be Standard, Height * Constant, Height * Width * Constant, etc using the "measurement" fields, or Step consumption.
On Formula lines, consumption calculation formula can only be Standard or Step.
Hi,
while it is easy to find reasons to use formulas rather than BOMs, it is harder to see why one should use BOMs rather than formulas.
Let's assume we are talking about a mixed production environment where a some products typically process-type and others are discreet: would there be a disadvantage to use formulas for all items rather than mixing BOMs and formulas? I.e. is there additional functionality for BOMs/Production orders compared with Formulas/Batch orders?
Dear Weaveriski,
Thank you for your explanation, now it is easy to decide which one suits to customer requirement.

Today there are interchangeable in reality.
If you have a requirement to define the components by percentage, if you have By/Co Product requirements then you could use Formulas and Batch Orders, but if the requirements dont include these sort of elements you are free to choose between the two.
Dear Weaveriski
Currently requirement gathering is in process, if i study the difference between batch order and production order, it is clearly mentioned that whatever the process can be reverse-able like, automobiles or steel manufacturers we can use production orders, and for that process in which we cannot reverse production like pharmaceuticals we cannot separate the combine material for that productions we will use batch orders/formula.
If we talk about the business process it look like we can use any of them from both options.
Needs Suggestions to confirm my action.
That would really depend upon the requirement of the business - why in your conclusion do you believe they need batch orders?
Dear All,
For Ammunition Manufacturing Company, could any one suggest what should i use batch order or production order ?
As per my understanding and research batch order will be used. please suggest.
Regards
Concept of setup by percentage and the cost allocation (but that is related to the Co/By). There used to be more differences (Configuration and dimensions etc.) but I believe the formula side is now equal to the BOM but has more functionality. Traditionally formulas are for the process industry and BOMs for discrete manufacturing, but ultimately you decide by the functionality you will use and not the industry you are in.
Production orders create items that are of type BOM, Batch orders create items that are of type Formula, by-product, co-product.
The main functionality a batch order offers beyond a production order is:
-Batch balancing functionality / consideration of ingredient potency
-Creation of Co/By Products at RAF, either dynamically or planned, in addition to the main product.
-Batch attribute inheritance
-Consolidated orders (bulk / packed)
