FrX Error: Current Version of the application cannot be determined

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

Moving my CFO to a new computer via PC Mover application, but his FrX won't run OR uninstall so I can reinstall.  Keeps giving the error that " Current version of the application cannot be determined" and the installer terminates.  If I run the transferred file instead, I get a 429 error regarding an ActiveX object, but I've unregistered and reregistered DAO350.dll.  What can I be missing?

This appears to be an issue with Windows 10 1709 and later.  I can successfully install and run FRx on Windows 10 1703 and older no problem.  Also of note, if I upgrade my 1703 image to 1709 AFTER installing FRx, FRx seems to run no problem.  I've done no testing with Windows 10 1803, so I can't speak to that version.

That said, I've currently not found a way to install and run FRx on a fresh copy of Windows 10 1709.

If FRx is required, you may want to download the 1703 ISO from VLSC and build a new 1703 image specifically for your accounting team, which is what I did.

That said, FRx is completely unsupported by Microsoft now, so you also may want to use that fact as the catalyst for a migration to Management Reporter to avoid hardware/OS issues in the future.

Maybe as a workaround load FRx to an RDS server and let him run from there.

I've had to make sure I install FRx on Windows 10 Build 1703 before updating to 1709 (Creator's Update).  In one case, on a new PC, I forgot and had to rollback to the original from the Recovery Partition before continuing.  Evidently the FRx installer is looking for the Windows build number and just doesn't "know" about 1709 (or they started putting it in a different registry key).  It's pretty sorry when Microsoft owns a product but won't support it and the support people who DO know what's wrong would rather force you into a support contract than be helpful. That's a really good reason to stay AWAY from that company, IMHO.

To date no I have not found a resolution. For my customer they had to start all over with Windows 10 Before the "Creator" Update. I installed FRx and then they updated their Windows 10 to the latest release.

I did put a post on the MSX Group Forum for FRx. Their support answer the message with they have figured out the option but wanted my customer to get a support plan with FRx from them. It is an option but as they described to me the support plan will only support FRx as it is (cannot do any updates to FRx because Microsoft owns it) and they cannot guarantee that they can still keep it working.

Has anyone been able to resolve this or work around it?

I think this issue was caused by something in the Windows 10 Creator update that was released last Fall. Up till that time, I was able to install FRx on Windows 10 without issue.
