Failed Login - New User

I'm a student and we are using Dynamics GP for our class. I go through the installation process step by step and word by word and succesfully install the program. I then log in with the "sa" login and create my own unique user ID.

When i then exit the program and re-open to try and login with my new Unique ID, it gives me and error message stating "The login failed. Attempt to log in or contact your system administrator." I have asked my teacher about it and he says he doesn't know the problem.

If I attempt to login with "sa" user id again and attempt to select a fake business file to load it gives me the following error "You don't have permission to open this file. Contact the file owner or an administrator to obtain permission"

So I then have to unistall the program and do it all over again. And every time I exit the program and try to login with this new ID I have made I get the same exact errors.

I am using version 10.01.0004

and attempting to login to server Dynamics GP EDU

Any suggestions?

Thanks

    AZ,

It sounds to me like the "sa" user doesn't have the proper permissions it needs on the SQL server. Did you setup the SQL end or was that already setup?  I would start there as it sounds like "sa" is having an issue with getting to the data.

    Regards,

It could be one of a number of issues.

First, I would check the ODBC settings for the source 'Dynamics GP EDU'. Make sure its a SQL Native Client ODBC, and none of the check boxes in the ODBC set up windows 3 and 4 are ticked.

Then I would be 100% sure that I am using the correct 'new user' ID and password (case sensitive).

When you set up the user, untick the 'Apply password policy' tick box and try and log in.

If it fails, go back, tick the password policy box, and also the 'Change Password at next login' tick box.

The log in again. If you are saked to change your password, then at least we know the user ID is being validated.

Also, look for the user ID you set up within SQL Enterprise Manager and verify its security settings / database access etc.

What do you mean when you say 'select a fake business file to load'? Isthis a company database in GP?

This is not a GP issue - it has to do with access to the SQL server instance / issue with security logins - most probably.

    Ian.

Create ODBC before creating an user.

    & then

Allow  access to any company or TEST company.

These are basic setup of  an user.

You have two sets of security issues here:

    1) SQL Security allows access to the database inside SQL

    2) Windows security allows access to the various program files that comprise GP

All users of GP must be added using GP. Tools->Setup->System->Users. You then grant access for each user to the companies within GP. This handles the SQL security portion.

GP, the program, needs to be installed as Admin of the local computer and once it is installed you need to grant full control to the C:\Program Files\Microsoft Dynamics\GP folder to the Windows Everyone's group. This will give users access to the program files and you will no longer get the permission denied message on the local files.

Another consideration may be the authentication method which is currently set in SQL. It should be set to mixd mode which will allow authentication of SQL based users (which are required for GP).

Thanks everyone for the speedy replies, however I am not as versed in this as most of you are. How or where can I find the ODBC that you are talking about. And as far as the SQL server goes, I did not set it up, and I am not sure if our teacher has set it up. We are simply using the 120 day trial for my class. Not sure how that effects it.

So if you could help me on the way of the ODBC that would be great

    Start Button->Control Panel->Administrator Tools->ODBC Administrator

What type of computer are you using? (W-XP or W7 32 or 64 bit).

    This can get quite involved.

Try Googling "create odbc dynamics gp" and you will find many articles on how to do this.
