Slow Performance in The Second AOS Server.

Hello everyone!

I have one customer with performance issue when using the second AOS Server. Here is a short environment description:

01 SQL Server 2014 full updated - 128GB RAM - 02 Processors Six Core without hyperthreading. one fast disk for each kind of database files. (The is no AX problem for databases)

01 AOS Server - 32GB RAM - 02 Processors Six Core with hyperthreading (24 cores). (No problems using AX from here)

01 AOS Server - 32GB RAM - 02 Processors Six Core with hyperthreading (24 cores). (This one is the problem)

And also one server for SSRS, one more for batch, another for SSAS, one more for EP.... i mean, one server for each ax component... really a very nice production environment.

It is important to say that all those servers are new physical server with Windows Server 2012 Standard and updated. high speed disks, no less than 32GB RAM and at least one Six Core process.

The weird thing is that when users run AX from their workstations there is no performance problem, really no one.... but when the same users run the same process from the second AOS it is slow performance.... a report takes something about 10 seconds more to open...

This same process is slow when running from within the AOS server 2. From within the AOS 1 it is ok...

There is no compilation or synchronization problems... CILL is ok...

The AX is 2012 R3 with CU8...

There is really no problem using AX with only one AOS, just when i start using the second AOS, and i need to add this AOS in this environment!!!

Was i clear enough?!!!

    Hi Francisco

On the Server where the AOS is slow, you have tried to install a new instance and check if it works fine?

André, during the production environment setup i checked and changed all the configuration parameters according to the Microsoft AX best practices from TechNet, MSDN and Performance blogs!

The most weird thing is that there is really no diference between AOS 01 and AOS 02 server. Hardware, Software, updates... everything is the same!

I just can think about problems with some old/garbage/wrong registry inside the database...

And still searching for the solution!!

I can think about reinstall Windows Server, but is it a physical server. There is no virtual machines.

There is no old environment/server in this new infrastructure. All the Servers used for upgrade was turned off 03 months ago!

I just used the databases files, all the other softwares was installed from scratch!

Have you also checked the Power Management Settings in the BIOS and Windows? This should be "High performance".

It could also be a corrupted Windows installation/update, I have seen that happening as well. Recreating the VM from scratch proved to resolve the problems.

Also since you mention upgrade - I never leave the old environment on. Do the data upgrade on a separate VM, have the Database ready through the data upgrade checklist. Once it is completed, discard the upgrade VM, and have a fresh R3 AOS deployed on new VMs with latest updates, just connecting against the already upgraded database.

    One important detail...

It was an upgrade project... from AX2009

Can it be related to old configurations migrated from 2009? I've searched some known configuration tables but could not find anything... but i dont know all the configuration tables!!!

The upgrade was finished 3 months ago!

RE: Slow Performance in The Second AOS Server.

    Hello André!

I have another hardware, AOS, for bacth, the same physical configuration!

At the AOS Servers there is only the Microsoft requirements for Dynamics AX AOS Service to run. Users are not allowed to connect to any servers!

The Debug is not enabled in this production environment.

    Hello Vilmos!

There is no antivirus installed in booth servers for now.

VSS Services is configured as Manual Start and at this moments it is stoped!

I will try disable entiry firewall...!

    Hi Francisco,

In addition to the answer from Vilmos, check if there are additional services running. Can you also indicate if one or both servers are setup to act as batch server?

You can also check if the AOS server allows for debugging. This could also make a performance difference. This should be disabled for production environments.

RE: Slow Performance in The Second AOS Server.

If you have antivirus or anything that scans files, make sure you add all AX folders on an exclusion list. Typically that is the cause of performance hogs on AOS instances, we had to do the same at my previous workplace.

I also had to disable Volume Shadow Copy (VSS service), because that caused problems for the AX AOS instance from where the SSRS reports were running, and could be the source of your issues too.

Also you might want to check the networking bit, like try to disable Windows Firewall in the Domain profile completely, check the physical network layout and also the drivers / configuration, that could cause some delays too.
