Management Reporter over WAN/VPN?

Hi,

Does anyone know if I can run Management Reporter (designer or viewer) over Wide Area Network (WAN) using VPN for example? I have a main office and remote location and they’re connected via site to site VPN (always on VPN). So, you can technically create an ODBC to the SQL server residing on the main office network from the remote location. I know that running GP on WAN is not supported but I was wondering if I can install the MR client on users' computers at the remote site and have the users at the remote location open the MR Viewer (at a minimum) from the remote location and possibly even run reports using the Designer as well. Is this a supported setup? Did anyone try this before? Performance?

Thanks!

    Hi,

GP can be accessed over a WAN with a Terminal Server. We currently access MR via a Terminal Server and we have had no major issues.

    Hi,

As Rosemary has mentionned it, the best is to access the MR Designer / Viewer over a TS or Citrix server.. However, the MR Designer client should be able to work across WAN thru a permanent VPN connexion, but don't expect thrilling performances.. unless you have a very fast connexion between the 2 VPN end-points (i.e. at least 10-20 Mbs).

Sharing the MR2012 client apps from a TS server is best, since the proximity of the back-end and applications server are usually on the same high-speed backbone (i.e. 1Gb Ethernet).

Thanks Béat. We use RDS now and it works fine but I was wondering if anyone installed the client on a remote user and used VPN to connect to the MR server and launch reports (for viewing only). I'm interested in knowing user experience about this setup and also to know if it's technically supported by MS GP or not.

    You're welcome..

For remote users I'd try to get them viewing the reports thru the MR Web client, which since CU9 or 10  is the default display mode I believe for reports. The Web client has a lighter footprint and doesn't require any local client installation. However it was only supported thru IE at some point, because using Silverlight.. I think that may have changed now. Still remains the fact that windows authentication is working best with IE :-).
