can't connect to headquarters server from headquarters client

I have 2 Microsoft RMS 2.0 that connect to the headquarters all servers use static IP address including the headquarters Server

Last week, both RMS clients started failing to connect to the headquarters server with this error message:

======== CONNECTION STARTED =========
Connection to socket was unsuccessful: Message Timeout
An error was detected, connection will be aborted.
======== CONNECTION ENDED =========

This connection worked fine with no issues up untila week ago! I confirmed that the IP address in and port number are correct in the HQ Client configuration for both the HQ server and HQ client and since my IPs are static, I have the correct IP configures (I also checked via CMD ipconfig/all)

The port that I am using for my HQ server is 34200 and the port that I am using for the HQ client is 34202

from the RMS in the store I opened the HQ client configuration and from the HQ Server tab clicked on 'Test Network connection'

The results are 'The following server could not be connected'

and provides the correct IP and port numbers for the correct HQ Server.

There is network to all machines as I am able to browse the web as well as RDP to both machines.

Please help me, I am unable to sync any items to any of my stores since last week.

Thank you

guy

I would start by turning off all firewalls as a test and try to connect.

ipconfig/all only tells you about the internal network, not the external IP address.  For that go to www.whatismyip.com for example, to find that and confirm that HQ client has that address for HQ Server.  If you do not have a static IP address there, that will become an issue.  ISP's usually charge $10-50 per month for a external static IP.  There are ways around this though.

I suggest you find a competent RMS reseller to help with this issues.  HQ is a whole different animal than SO is.

I do have a static IP address and this setup has worked for 3 years up until a week ago, I checked all the IPs and ports and they are all correct.

    Thanks,

    guy

Have a store ping the IP to see if it replies.

Ping the IP from your store and see if it replies.

you are right I can't ping the HQ server from the store RMS

    I get Request timed out!!!

That may not necessarily be bad, some routers can be configured not to reply.  Have you power cycled your router and modem recently?  Is the router, modem and any switches on a battery backup?  They should be.

Next step is to confirm the external IP with whatismyip .

External IP confirmed via www.whatismyip.com and match the IP in HQ server and client

I am not sure if the router or modem were rebooted, that only time this would happen is with a power outage and I didn't hear of such.

Do you think restarting the modem/router would fix this issue?

It wouldn't hurt anything.  That's why we reccommend a battery backup for the modem/routher/switch. A little one with AVR protection if its not close to another UPS.

    Any other thoughts out there?

Even after a router restart, I am still getting the same issue!!

I did noticed that the laptop at the store (Connected via WIFI) is able to ping the HQ IP address, however the RMS store machine (HQ server) ping is not responding!!!

    please help.

I have updated some firewall settings and I am able to both PING and run nslookup on the RMS register to the HQ server machine, using the IP address and it;s working fine with no issues, however when I try to connect from the HQ server to the HQ client it is still failing!!!!

Any ideas what else I can do?

    Thanks,

    guy

So the SBC firewall settings somehow was setup to the worng computer, once I have switched the firewall seeting to HQ Server I was able to sync both stores.

The issue above was due to the fact that I didn't start teh HQ server!!!

    Thanks,

    guy
