Number of Dimensions

I understand we can use 2 Global Dimensions and up to 8 shortcut dimensions, but I see I can create more than 8 dimensions.  Can BC support more than 8 dimensions?   Look forward to a response.

    Hello JGarcia,

Please look at my screenshots and see if this is what you want.
I have 8 shortcut dimensions on General Ledger Setup.

    I created DIM09 and DIM12 for illustrations.

I added DIM09 to DIM12 to my purchase invoice's line using the 'Dimensions' action button found in the line's section.

On the general ledger entries page, you can use the 'Dimensions' action button to expand and look at the posted dimensions.

    Result from Posted Purchase Invoice.

You can add dimensions outside of the 8 shortcut dimensions to documents (header & line) and on the different journal pages.

Hi, Yes, BC supports more than 8 dimensions, but unlike Global Dimensions and Shortcut Dimensions, it is a bit complicated to add them on a page or use them in a report.
Dynamics 365 Business Central: How to add Dimensions to the page (Other than Global and Shortcut dimensions)

    Hope this helps as well.
    Thanks.

we could use a dimensions action button ( I found this under the line option) to enter transactions against a dimension that is outside of the 8.  Is this a correct assessment?

No that's not correct. You can only create transactions against the current 8 dimensions that are set up to be used in the General Ledger Setup Page.

once entered where do I see the entry to that dimension once the transaction is posted

In posted documents, you can use the same dimensions action button. In posted ledger entries page, the dimensions can be added as fields to the page.

By default, you can indeed create an unlimited number of dimensions in Business Central. However, when it comes to pages and reports, you can only use up to 8 shortcut dimensions without additional customization.
A couple of years ago, we had a similar requirement for one of our subsidiaries installed Business Central V14 OnPrem, where we needed to extend beyond the 8 shortcut dimensions. With the help of our implementation partner, we were able to extend it to 12 dimensions, but it did require some custom development to accommodate this. If you're looking to go beyond the default limit, you would likely need a similar customization.

    Appreciate all the responses.

Yi, mentioned, we could use a dimensions action button ( I found this under the line option) to enter transactions against a dimension that is outside of the 8.  Is this a correct assessment?  If that is correct, once entered where do I see the entry to that dimension once the transaction is posted.  I was able to find and use the "Dimensions Action Button", but am struggling to see it once posted.

Would appreciate some clarification.  Thank you.

Yes, Business Central can support more than 8 dimensions overall. While you can use only 2 Global Dimensions and up to 6 Shortcut Dimensions at any one time, you have the flexibility to create and manage additional dimensions beyond that limit. This allows you to track various aspects of your business as needed. So, you can indeed create more than 8 dimensions, but remember that only 8 can be actively used in your reporting and transactions at the same time.

The system supports the use of up to 8 dimensions simultaneously. To select your dimensions, go to the General Ledger Setup Page, where you can choose which 8 dimensions to use. Although you can create more than 8 dimensions on the Dimensions Page, this flexibility allows for changes and modifications over time. However, you cannot use more than 8 dimensions at once.

Yes, you can have multiple Dimensions, there is limit of what you can see in BC but all the other dimensions can we displayed through some customization and you will need to get a developer / a partner involved to get them displayed.

    Hello,

This is a good post on Dimensions.

To summarize, you can have unlimited dimensions in Business Central but need to access them using the 'Dimensions' action button as they are not displayed on the pages, unlike Global and Shortcut.
