Another promise broken by Microsoft?

Situation: Server dies - Dynamics GP 10 (service pack 2).  We have a new server and the backups of the data. However the install coded was also on that machine.  No problem right? Go to PartnerSource and download the DVD for GP 10.  Low and behold - the only version of GP 10 that you can download at this time is GP 10 (Service Pack 5).

Here is the response from Microsoft:

It is my understanding that you are in need of an earlier service pack release of Dynamics GP v10 then sp5. You have searched PartnerSource as have I and haven’t found it yet.

I have been informed that there is not a link that is available. They stated they may be able to help you with a work around to remove the service pack from the recent download.

 Two major problems with this:

1. The Broken Promise - when Microsoft announced that they were no longer shipping CD's/DVD's, they were questioned and they promised in several forums to always have original code available for download.

2. Service Pack 5 - the current data will not work plus, if you are going to go to GP2010 - you cannot from this version.

I just recently ordered a new system from Dell.  The sales rep informed me that they did not accept PayPal for payment.  I pulled out my credit card, proceeded with the purchase, and when I got to payment information, THERE WAS THE PAYPAL Option!.

It seems there is a lot of ignoranace in the IT field these days.  I have always encouraged clients to KEEP A COPY OF THE INSTALL MEDIA, even if it is downloaded code.  It is an essential component of a disaster recover scenario.  You obviously expected someone else to cover you in an emergency.  You have to do better.

Now, with that said, if you have not found one by the end of the week, I can send you a copy of my V10 RTM CD as soon as I get back home.  Call me and let me know.  You have my number.

    Hi again Clark,

I know it was probably said in frustration, but you really don't want the v10 RTM. The earliest I would go is the FP1 DVD. It was issued in June of 2008?

There were many problems with the RTM due to .NET 2.0 sp 1.

    Kind regards,

    Leslie

    Clark,

I think the DVD images are under Product Releases. The GP2010 DVD w SP1 image is here:

    https://mbs.microsoft.com/partnersource/support/selfsupport/productreleases/mdgp2010_release_download.htm?printpage=false#download

    GP 2010 RTM is here

    https://mbs.microsoft.com/customersource/downloads/servicepacks/MDGP2010_Previous_Release_Downloads

GP 10 is here (with SP 5)

    https://mbs.microsoft.com/partnersource/downloads/releases/md10_releasedownload.htm?printpage=false#download

    I hope this helps you.

    Kind regards,

    Leslie

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Another promise broken by Microsoft?

    Mariano,

Appreciate the response, but still not a solution. 1. The first link does not work for me or my customer - don't have MSDN subscriptions. 2. Second Link is to a Trial of Busness Essentials Only - I may be wrong, but I do not believe that can be used for a full install including AM Modules (not a BRM customer)

My outrage is primarily from the response from Microsoft Support (see first post) - which was basically, Sorry, it is not availabe - you are screwed.  I also know how concerned Partners and Customer were when this policy was changed. Partners didn't want to be legally responsible for protecting source code for their customers. Microsoft agreed and promised to support source code indefinitely. Having had to provided the documentation assuring access to original source code for customers and their Auditors, this is not a joke. There are CIO's, CFO's and CEO's signing off on Sarbanes Oxley Compliance documents based on this agreement that Microsoft made.

Having spent 15 years as one of GP greatest cheerleaders, I have and still use the word "Awesome", because I remember working with the likes of AccPac & IBM/Cobol systems.  I have seen the monster price tags of Oracle based solutions still not doing what GP can do. However, the continued "improvements" to Customer/Partner Source still confound me. I remember the Customer Awards GP received for their support and it was in large part because GP was the leader (at the time) of providing information for customers via the web.  Twice now, I have been told about Quota's on posting to Techknowledge - this is not how these awards were achieved.

    Clark.

The RTM image is available from:

    MSDN - https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/subscriptions/securedownloads/default.aspx

    Download Center - http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=01fb6157-0a4d-407a-afe0-de03af95c6b6

Now, I would appreciate if you stop the sensationalism.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Another promise broken by Microsoft?

Your are almost correct - when you look for Service Packs/Hot Fixes, you are shown the current release with a link to look at previous Service Packs/Hot Fixes. Which is the link you have found. But you need to look a little closer.

However, there are no links to any source code DVD's. If they had GP 10 RMT there - I would be happy. or GP 10 FP1/SP1, but the only source code available is GP 10 SP5. There should be a similar link here to full previous versions.

As shown in the response from Microsoft - this is on purpose (Lord know what the purpose is) and is a breach of contract!

You mean this link https://mbs.microsoft.com/customersource/downloads/servicepacks/MDGP10_Previouspatches.htm with all the updates?

They are still there. The problem is the new search in PartnerSource/CustomerSource doesn't seem to work right. A search on GPWindow.com got me to the GP SP5 page and on that page was a Previous Release link in the right hand column.

Re: Re: Another promise broken by Microsoft?

Your are correct, but I will add this senario.  Test Upgrade from GP 10 SvcPk 2 to GP 2010 on another server.  Pretty standard. Still need the older code to do a server move test upgrade.

I almost could see this for lapse versions, although again this question was asked and we were promised that GP code would always be maintained on Customer/Partner Source.

I have several customers that are current on maintenance, but still on version 9 for example. Know of a few still on 7, but still paying. So what is the purpose of this new policy?

    Clark,

I do think it's odd that the previous releases and service packs were removed from the site. I can tell you though that SP1 for GP2010 was released the other day and that will allow you to upgrade from GP10 SP5.

    Regards,

    Aaron
