Grouping Planned Orders - New Planned Orders Being Generated

I was curious if anyone has run into this.

If we have a planned order with a requirement date of 1/1/2024 and a second one with a requirement date of 2/1/2024 and we group those two orders, the system will end up generating hundreds of new planned orders. Leading to our buyers saying theyre getting a signal that makes no sense to them. Once full MRP runs, those signals go away and we start clean.

Just increasing the quantity on the planned order has the same effect.

It's almost like it's going through the bill of materials of the part and running MRP just on that one part with no additional information on the bigger picture like it does when full MRP runs.

The ideal is that it would just let us change the quantity on the planned order and not generate all these new signals, then MRP would run the next night and take the demand change into account then.

Appreciate any input

Grouping Planned Orders - New Planned Orders Being Generated
    Good day,

My advice is to configure a coverage group with a coverage code 'Period'

With the coverage group period, Master planning automatically bundles /groups the demand requirements in one planned order.

    Best regards,

We do have our dynamic plan and static plan set to the same plan. We weren't successful in the past having them be separate plans but we are exploring that option again.

There's not too much logic put into how we're trying to group the orders. It's more on a quantity/need basis where the planned orders are being determined based on our forecast, but due to changes in the amount of labor we have available any given day, we may produce a bit more than what the planned order is setting and a part higher up on the bill of materials needs to make more than what the planned order is requesting. But we can inspect our coverage groups there.

    Appreciate the input

Grouping Planned Orders - New Planned Orders Being Generated
    Hi iosono,

How are you grouping the planned orders?

In my latest project, the client needed to group the sales orders demand for the same item into a single planned order. To achieve this, you can set the coverage code on the coverage groups to 'Period' and define the period in days that you want to group this demand.

For example, if you have a ItemA with coverage group code set to period and number of days set to 30, any sales orders for this item that falls under this 30 day period will be grouped together into a single planned order.

    Hope this helps...

Modifying planned orders like adjusting quantities or grouping orders, the system recalculates requirements in the dynamic plan, potentially generating signals without considering the broader supply and demand context available in a full MRP. To manage this, use static plans as the default for grouped or modified orders, ensuring changes are processed during scheduled full MRP runs for better control. Reserve dynamic plans for immediate simulations while limiting operational changes to prevent unnecessary recalculations. The full MRP runs realign all components of supply and demand, providing a comprehensive view and reducing additional signals. You should Implement time fences like forecast or freeze fences to restrict recalculations to a defined planning period. Configure plans via Master Planning > Setup > Plans > Master Plans, set parameters using Master Planning > Setup > Master Planning Parameters, and run full MRP through Master Planning > Master Planning > Run > Master Planning to ensure efficient and stable operations. doing this will minimizes unnecessary signals.
