Nav 2009R2 MS SQL Database upgrade

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

Hello all experts. We're running MS Dynamics NAV 2009R2 on MS SQL 2008 server and we need to migrate to MS SQL 2014 due to the close 2008 EoL.

Is an update suggested or shall we install a new instance then migrate all the data from 2008 to 2014 ?

Thanks in advance for your advices

Br

Massimo

Ok... if renaming the instance is a problem for your requirements you can certainly upgrade 2008 to 2014.

    I recommend to:

    1) Make first a full backup of your databases

    2) Start from SQL Upgrade Advisor:

Yes, we have 2009R2 with both RTC and Classic clients.

The new instance name is only for SQL Server, so you only need to change the SQL Server name in the NAV Service Tier settings. Client doesn’t need anything to do.

Or you have NAV 2009R2 with CLASSIC CLIENT??? :O

oh, ok, thanks. I'd wanted to avoid to reconfigure all the clients with new instance name

Install a new SQL 2014 instance, then restore the dB on the new instance.
