Compatibility of Outlook 4.0 client with CRM 2011 server

Hi All.

I am testing an upgrade to CRM 2011.

I have already run an upgrade on my development server. Now I'd like to confirm that it'll work with Outlook client - CRM 4.0 with rollup 11 - that is installed on the sales PC.

I do not have CRM client on my PC. Can I install CRM 4.0 + Rollup11 and try to connect to CRM 11 server?  I am reading that this compatibility is supported only if client is installed prior to the Server upgrade. Does anyone know?

Thanks a lot.

    According to Microsoft IG guide:

    Post-upgrade steps for clients

To be compatible with Microsoft Dynamics CRM Server 2011, Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 for Outlook clients must be upgraded to Update Rollup 7 or later. However, to experience the new features that are available with Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2011 you must upgrade to Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2011 for Outlook.

To upgrade clients, follow these steps:

    1. If you use Microsoft Dynamics CRM for Outlook or Microsoft Dynamics CRM for Outlook with Offline Access, run Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2011 for Outlook Setup on every user's computer. To ease the upgrade use Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager 2007 (SCCM) or Microsoft Group Policy to push the upgrade to users. See the Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2011 Planning Guide for information about how to deploy Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2011 for Outlook using these methods.

    2. Verify that Microsoft Dynamics CRM for Outlook and Microsoft Dynamics CRM for Outlook with Offline Access have the latest updates.

    3. Test the functionality from Microsoft Outlook and from the Microsoft Dynamics CRM Web application.

For more information, see Upgrade Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 for Outlook to Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2011 for Outlook in this guide.

    But according to the www.opsvault.com/10-tips-for-upgrading-the-microsoft-crm-2011-outlook-client

The CRM 2011 server does support CRM 4.0 Outlook clients that were installed prior to the upgrade. The 2011 environment does not support new CRM 4.0 Outlook client installs after the 2011 has been installed/upgraded.

This compatibility has been provided by Microsoft for the users who are already using CRM 4.0, i want to understand why you want to use the CRM 4.0 outlook client with CRM 2011 where you have an option to install CRM 2011 Outlook client. Could you please install the CRM 2011 outlook client installed of installation CRM 4.0 outlook client on your system and work on CRM outlook client without any issue and with all the new features and a new interface?

    Thanks,

    Mohammad

    Mohammad,

Eventually all my clients will be upgraded to CRM 11. But I need to do it in steps. First, I'll upgrade the Server to CRM 11. At that point I need old (CRM 4.0) clients continue to work with CRM 11 server until I'll upgrade all the clients.

My question comes from what you mention:

    ------------------

"The CRM 2011 server does support CRM 4.0 Outlook clients that were installed prior to the upgrade."

The 2011 environment does not support new CRM 4.0 Outlook client installs after the 2011 has been installed/upgraded."

    ------------------

My test PC doesn't have any Outlook CRM client now. I want to Install 4.0 client to make sure it'll work with CRM 11 server, that is already running on my DEV box.

Can I do it? Or I need to roll back Dev server to 4.0, Install 4.0 Client, Upgrade the Dev server to 11 again?

    Hi Lana,

On your teats PC that does not have any Outlook Client now. If you are going to install the CRM 4.0 Client  and want to configure that with CRM 2011 that is already running in your Dev box, then I cannot say whether it will configure and if configured will all the features will work as expected or not. Because this is not mentioned in our IG guide and hence not tested.

What I am saying here, this compatibility has been provided for the ease of the users who already has CRM 4.0 Outlook client installed. If you don't have the CRM outlook client installed on your PC. Instead of installing the CRM 4.0 Outlook client or doing any rollback why can't you simply install the CRM 2011 outlook client? Is there a specific reason you want to use CRM 4.0 Outlook client first with CRM 2011 server and then want to go for CRM 2011 outlook client.

    Thanks,

    Mohammad

Thank you for the reply. I understand.

The reason was only to minimize the risk of upgrading and time that required to hand-roll CRM 11 on the clients.

But I guess, we can do it all at once.

    Hi Lana,

    Thanks you for the reply.

If that is the case you may always test the behavior on one machine after installing the CRM 2011 outlook client as the dev. server is already CRM 2011 and complete the testing before implementing it for all the other client machines. One more thing I forgot to mention is that please applying the same update rollup on the client machine as there in your CRM 2011 Dev. server for better performance and is always recommended.

    Thanks,

    Mohammad
