Hi guys,

For a non technical person, can I know what is the different when we doing integration using OData than WebService, also the Pros and Cons (Benefit and Disadvantage). In more simplified word and easy to understand for functional person to understand better.

Thanks

I have the same question (0)

The question doesn't really make sense, because OData is a protocol for web services. Didn't you mean accessing data entities through OData web service vs. developing a custom service? If not, please explain what you actually need. Maybe you should focus on the description of the business problem, rather than jumping to technical terms.

    Hi Martin,

Thanks. Yes, as a "Business Analyst", all the technical term is quite confusing. The behind story is in one of my discussion, there is a conversation during integration between D365 FO and external system, which described like "we are using OData, not web service", it is either I heard it wrongly or the person didn't explain correctly.

That's why I'm here asking for some fair easy to understand insight regarding this. So how exactly this OData and web service relate each other, or, is OData web service different than custom service ? how different and what is the Pro and Cons of it ? May I know a simple usage that make it different ?

    Thanks again.

    Hi Axel,

You can read the Microsoft Learn page about the different integration options as a start: Integration between finance and operations apps and third-party services - Finance & Operations | Dynamics 365 | Microsoft Learn

Let us know if this is answering your question.

Hi Axel, In addition to above suggestions, You can try ChatGPT to understand concepts and technical terms.

    Sample Questions

    • Explain OData and Custom Web Services in D365 to a 10 year old
    • Explain in simple words OData and Custom Web Services in D365 to a business consultant
    • OData vs Custom Web Service in tabular form

Note: The downside of ChatGPT is that it's not 100% accurate so you have to verify answers.

"Web service" is a generic term for communication between applications through internet protocols, especially HTTP.

Open Data Protocol (OData) is a standard for one particular design of web services. Therefore an OData service is a specific type of web services.
