How much space would be added to our instance if we added 1,000,000 contacts?

Does anyone have any idea how to do an estimate on the space records would take? I am trying to determine what the space and resulting cost requirements would be for adding 1,000,000 contact records to our instance of dynamics. The records would only have basic data such as company Name, Phone, Email, Address, Name, Gender, half a dozen custom bit fields.

Any ideas how much space that would require or a way to determine space requirements?

Hi Goutam, is there any way to find out how much space does one record takes in d365?

    Hi John ,

I have seen the fields First Name , Last Name those  are taking approximate  15- 30 KB. let say you have 30 fields so it would be around 900 KB. So for 1000,000  record it would be around  600 MB to 800 MB. So if you consider other system fields in the table so it may be increase around 1GB.

In addition Audit , security role  those are taking huge size better to go minimum 5 GB overall size of your database.

    Hope this helps.

This is a very rough and conservative calculation for a contact record:

    • System-generated fields - e.g. ownerid, createdby, createdon. These are mostly Guids and datetime fields. I've not checked, but I'd allow ~300 bytes per contact
    • Address entities - 2 records per contact with another few system fields. Allow another ~200 bytes per contact
    • For all text fields, 2 bytes per character. Maybe an average of 400 bytes per contact
    • Indexes. There are several, and on the system fields, so I'd guess at the index size being roughly the same as the data size

This would give 1800 bytes per contact, so round up to 2K per contact, which would be 2 GB for a million contacts. I've erred on the conservative side, so it's probably between 1 and 2 GB.

This is not including any activities, workflow records, audit or sharing, all of which could have a noticeable impact

This is something that is a little hard to say, but maybe you can calculate it yourself, by taking an average:

If you take all the fields for a single contact (numbers is parenthesis are estimates):

First Name (50), Last Name (50), Full Name (100), Phone (50), Email Address (100), Gender (4), Address (500), Additional Fields (500), you come to around 1500K per contact, which I estimate will probably be less and closer to 500-1000K per contact.

    1M contacts * 1000K = 1GB of space.

Again this might be slightly off, so just take additional space into consideration, so maybe consider 2-3GB.

This is considering only contacts of course and not other entity data.

Besides that, I don't think there is an exact number you can find out...

    Good luck. Hope this helps...

You're unlikely to take over a GB of space if it's just raw data,  Most of the time, it's the attachments, images, etc. that end up filling up a CRM database.
