A client has requested that we format numbers for US clients as (888) 888-8888 but for international customers just use a string of numbers as in 8888888888 for international. What is the best way to implement this formatting so that it shows up consistently in reports and forms, etc.

Hi Jim,
I personally think that it requires some dicipline from the persons entering the phone numbers. It is possible to have a customization, but that will require also an additional field for the identification if it is a US phone number or not. It is also possible that e.g. a person has multiple phone numbers both US numbers and international. So this is not related to the country of the person or customer.
Perhaps you could build something like Outlook now has that after input it tries to format it. Then the person can correct the area code. But note that the user entering the numbers can contantly being bothered by a pop-up.
I would suggest to prevent the customization.
