Using Bin Numbers without Being Forced To Enter Them

Hi:

We simply want to tie a Bin Number to an Item, and we'd like to have the privilege of entering this bin into the transaction screens housing this item.

But, we don't want to set up a "bin mandatory" situation.

The bin number will simply be a reference.  We don't want users to be forced to enter the bin number.

Is this possible and, if so, how?

Thanks!

John

Maybe this will help you set it up as needed.

To use bin codes as a reference without making them mandatory, follow these steps:

    1. Navigate to the Location Card

Search for “Locations” in Business Central and open the Location Card for the relevant location.

    2. Find the “Bin Mandatory” toggle

On the Location Card, look under the Warehouse FastTab.

    3. Turn off “Bin Mandatory”

Disable this toggle to ensure that bin codes are optional. Users can still enter bin codes manually on transactions, but they won’t be required.

    4.

This setup allows you to reference bins for items without enforcing warehouse bin handling.

So do you want a generic Bin or you have a Variation?

@RockwithNav: It simply needs to be a free form alpha numeric code available for use, if necessary, on transaction screens.

Free from alpha numeric, that's something all to deal with the naming convention.
If you want to use Bin as a reference without having a validation from the system then you can disable it on the location card and then enter manually on the bin column while doing the transactions.

@RockwithNav: The locations have never been set up for bins.  So, they're already disabled in that sense.  When I try to enter a free form code in the Bin field in any transaction screen, an error appears saying that the bin doesn't exist in the Bin table.

You can keep the 'Bin Mandatory' toggle turned off and simply set the Default Bin Code to your preferred bin

    Thanks

    Hello there,

If I understand the request properly, then I would suggest using the "Shelf No." field on the item card, under inventory instead, if it is only for guidance/reference.

If you enter locations & bins on certain transactions, then you will down the line need to enter it when you consume our move it. I would not recommend to semi-use bins on locations, either you go for it or you dont.

One could for exemple have one location, with bin mandatory, and then you have one bin that you always use, and then in some cases you put items on the other actual bins from time to time. But in that case, all transactions would have a bin code (even tho they would be on the same one), and in those cases where you want to put in on the actual bin code, then you do that.

But that is my take on the matter.

    Br,
    Richard
