GP 2015 Retainer fees mysteriously appearing on time and expense invoices

We have an issue where retainer fee amounts mysteriously appear on time sheet invoices or expense invoices.  Once they appear, we try to remove them so we can process a separate retainer invoice, but the system won't allow us to use the retainer ID for the client.  I've even tried to delete the invoice and create a new invoice and the retainer still shows up. Any assistance would be appreciated.
