Posted on by Microsoft Employee

How is a Segment in (Marketing) different from Marketing List in (Sales)?

Is Marketing List for Campaign same as Segment for Customer Journey?

Are their purpose any different Marketing List for Campaign and Segment for Customer Journey?

    Hi Nilay,

Marketing list is a list of customer contact details where your customer has opted in or opted out for certain subscriptions for example email newsletters, marketing updates etc..This list can be part of your existing or future campaign. While segment is broad term which signify how you can use existing audience which are part of your "marketing list" or may be "imported" or may be "filtered" to feed your customer journey.

Scenario 1: You have to launch a new email campaign ( to introduce new product ) who are your existing customers living in

central London. In this scenario you will design your segment and pull up customers who are only living in central London.

Scenario 2: You have published a new blog and want to share with subscribed or opt-in audience to receive email notifications. In this scenario you will target the audience which are part of your marketing list "who have opted " to receive email notification.

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks & Regards

Important side not is that Segments are based on data in the Customer Insights database, where marketing lists would query the CRM database.

Segments let you query interaction data (email opens, clicks, bounces etc) in adition to any CRM data you have synced to Customer Insights.

    Hi Nilay,
A Segment is an equivalent of a Marketing List in Dynamics 365 for Marketing. However the Segments and Customer Journeys have the drag and drop designer for ease of use. You can also create a Segment using a Marketing List if you wish. We suggest you just setup Segments for use in Dynamics 365 for Marketing as if you have high volumes of Marketing Lists, you can see performance impacts to them.

    Hope this helps.
    Thanks,
    Megan
