we are about to switch from a third party provider to Microsft CRM Online directly. We have a full backup and would like to know if we can import/migrate easily to Microsoft CRM online.

    Hi Helmut,

Unfortunately Microsoft does not allow to recover the backup database from on-premise to online because we don't have access to the SQL and Microsoft don`t do this, but the inverse is possible.

In this case you'll have to use the tool to migrate all the data from On-premise to Online or Online to Online. You can use the Xrm tool kit or the new one existing in the new SDK.

Prepare your self to suffer a bit, bear in mind that`s some issues with the Xrm tool kit, because it does not update some records, you need to do some fixes on the code.

    Hi Helmut,

As Hugo mentioned, Microsoft does not restore an online organisation.

The Instance Adapter used to be one of the most popular tools for that scenario for  but I don't know if it still works after CRM 2015 update.

Before the data migration, extract the "default solution" and import it to the new instance.

For Data Migration there are free options and third-party tools like Scribe:

On top of what Bruno and Hugo said, I'd recommend opening up a ticket with Microsoft requesting this migration.  They've been talking about supporting it for a while, and if we get enough squeaky wheels, maybe they'll finally support just sending them the database to migrate Online.
