UOM remains locked when using write-in products

Posted on by 387

Something I have never noticed before but when using write in products its not possible to select a Unit of measure. I wasn't sure if this was a customisation in our environment or not but the functionality is the same in a vanilla install.

I cannot make the field editable via configuration, but have yet to try using JavaScript or business rules. Prior to doing this I wanted to understand the reasoning behind the field being locked when using write in products. To me it does seem like a requirement that should be supported.

There doesn't appear to be any mention of this elsewhere on the net?

    Mudassar,

If the UOM is the same each time you could create a custom SSRS report with the UOM on? Other than that what about creating an additional UOM field "Write-In UOM" which is a lookup to the OOB Units and use this in a custom SSRS report?.

When I was looking at this I couldn't make it editable via configuration or business rules. I did not try changing it via XRM page JS you could try that. I assume it will stop you though so the only other way would be unsupported via Jquery which I would not recommend.

Thanks Neil, that was my understanding too as to why it was locked, however, I cannot see any down side to allowing the user to associate a UOM with a write in product.  Perhaps we want to show a text description on our quotation but still have the quantity to show as 200KG for example.

Any supported work around to make the Unit of measure editable so that write in product unit can be changed and made printed on the quote.

UOM relates to products in your product catalog. It is going to be used to derive correct quantities and prices etc.

Write in products are not actually products! This concept is to just have a text line on your quote / order (etc) that refers to what is being sold. Write in products are great for ad-hoc / one off sales.

Typically you wouldn't expect write in product to have inventory etc. (Therefore UOM would not be applicable.)
