Discontinue Service Item

Posted on by 75,730

Can anyone explain the logic behind the reason why you are not allowed to discontinue a service item? I will enter this a product suggestion but in the interim I am going to write a little VS application that will allow for this. Is there any reason why this is a bad idea? Any bad downstream effects?

Hi Richard - post the connect link when you have added this suggestion.

I can't see any downstream effects of doing this...really all you are doing is stopping the item being added to a sales order.

What if you deleted the Item/Site link? Wouldn't this stop the item being selectable?

Ron, you and I think alike. We need to define our goals and state clear objectives. Otherwise they will think we are a bunch of whackos. Maybe we can hook up in Houston next March for Convergence.

I think the downside is that in GP you can "Un-Discontinue" items.  In other words, if you have a service item, force it to have a type of "Discontinued", a user would be able to display that item and change its type back to "Sales Inventory".  So, you probably need to keep track of what the original item type was, and if it had been service, only allow the user to switch it back to "Service".

And, when you post your suggestion to Microsoft, please post a link to it here.  I'll vote for it.  I've always been bothered by it.  We'll use social media to make it happen.  Maybe we can call this "Occupy GP"?
