Windows 10 Azure AD joined and Dynamics AX 2012 R3 (Unable to log in)

We have rolled out devices to the users which are Azure AD joined and users accounts are synced from on prem AD to Azure AD. We have installed AX client on top of these devices however AX is throwing error " Unable to Log on to Microsoft Dynamics AX".

We are able to access network file shares, printers and other network resources, so the authentication part looks okay.

Same users are able to access AX through Terminal server and it works fine as well, which means they have the proper rights to the AX but I cant figure out the fix for this issue.

I would really appreciate if you guys could help on this part.

    There might be a wrong configuration file. Can you review if the AX client configuration utility is setup correctly or if the configuration file contains an error?

    Hello Andre,

    We are using Azure Joined devices, but our users are still hybrid (i.e. on-premise Active Directory syncing to Azure Active Directory).  For on-premise applications, users can still connect from Azure Join devices by specifying the domain when entering username.  This approach works with the AX Enterprise Portal.  However, for the AX rich client, the user SID is being passed automatically from the Azure Join device for authentication and fails. When we import users into AX, we pull original AD SID instead of the Azure AD SID. We tried manually overwriting SID in AX UserInfo table with Azure AD SID, but no luck, authentication still fails. We were just wondering if others have similar infrastructure design and how they got around it.

    Hi Tatyana,

    Dynamics AX 2012 only supports Active Directory and should be configured in native mode. The domain and SID values in the UserInfo table should match the Active Directory and not Azure AD.

    Hello Andre,

    Yes, they match when we import user into AX, but we get authentication error just as what Avi reported above. We just tried overwriting the SID to see if it resolves the issue, but it didn't. So, if I understood you correctly, you suggest not to overwrite, but then we are back to square one - AX fails to authenticate users.

    Hi Tatyana,

    I don't know exactly what could cause the issue. As mentioned, the authentication is depending on AD; not Azure AD. It looks like the users are using the Azure credentials to login. I haven't worked on AX 2012 projects for about 5 years now; my work is now mainly with Dynamics 365.

    Did anyone get any solution to this (other than moving users to VDI, which we really don't wanna have to do just for AX) ?
