Import file attachments via DMF

I am looking to import file attachments from our legacy system to D365 F&O for various documents (Customer, Vendor, Sales order, Purchase order, Return order) during conversion/go live. I understand that I can export docuref attachments to a package format by way of DMF for any of the provided document handling data entities, and then import them because the resource folder will then contain the file to import. In my case, I do not have the file attachment in D365 already. What is the procedure to import docuref file attachments using DMF when the files do not already exist in D365? Is it a manual manipulation of a package export, resource folder and the manifest?

Thanks,
Steve

Yes, the export will give you the right format of the package (with the manifest file etc.) and you'll replace the data file with your actual references, and provide the files to attach.

Note that I don't understand what you mean by "I do not have an option of using DMF data entities to import the numerous file attachments per docuref attachment entities to create some sort of import process for attaching files at go-live conversion".

Thanks for the reply.  So are you saying that the first manually attached file will allow me to use DMF to export that file and its resources, which then can be used to create a full package of imports for that entity? Or my only option at go-live conversion is to manually attach the files I require to be imported to D365 for the various customers, vendors, orders.  I do not have an option of using DMF data entities to import the numerous file attachments per docuref attachment entities to create some sort of import process for attaching files at go-live conversion.

The problem that you don't have any attachment to export can be solved easily. Simply create a single attachment manually, so you can export it and get the package.

Manually creating all the files is possible, but it would be much more work.
