Set CreatedBy during data import

Hi all,

I have a requirement to set the CreatedBy and CreatedOn of some records during a data import.  We have data in an old system that we'd like to import to CRM, but we'd like to maintain the CreatedBy and CreatedOn of those records.

Is there an easy way to achieve this that doesn't involve plugins?

Thanks,

Ryan

    Hi Michel,

I've seen both of these in my searching, but neither of them explain how to set the Created By field

It's not possible to set the created by field through code.

This is something I'm never 100% sure about.. It seems it was done here:

    community.dynamics.com/.../migrating-importing-data-and-maintaining-created-by-modified-by-and-modified-on

The idea is that you need to set another user lookup (custom field) to the correct createdby, and, then, use a pre-create plugin to copy the value from that custom field to the out of the box createdby (directly in the target, without calling any additional updates from that plugin)

    Hi Alex,

I did see that solution, but I didn't manage to test it because it is only for v8.2 or greater

I only had 15 records to import, so I imported them, then created a workflow to copy them in the context of the workflow owner, and set the owner to be the intended owner of each record in turn.

This was an incredibly inefficient process, but for my purposes it worked.  It's so frustrating that there are no simple options available to set this information on creation/import of a record.

    Cheers,

    Ryan
