Service Pack Updates

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

Hello all,

We need to install Service Pack 1 for Windows 2008 (shows as an update for SBS 2011) and a service pack for MS SQL server (I believe also 2008.) I was wondering if these service packs or any other Microsoft updates have been find to have an adverse effect on RMS 2.0. Any information is helpful. The updates are planned for this Wednesday, August 13. Thanks again for your help.

I will add that the service pack for SQL Server 2008 R2 is quite large and took a little while to install...so long in fact that I cancelled the installation after the progress bar failed to move. It still shows as an installed update though and no further updates are available...finally.

Make a database backup first.   I always like to be safe before installing any kind of updates.

    Hi Ed,

Thanks for getting back to me. The updates I'm speaking of are the Windows Updates detected by the system. So the SQL Server update is what the OS and application are detecting as available. Hopefully that is the appropriate update for that instance of SQL Server. Do you have any further thoughts?

I have ran systems with both SQL Server 2008 Sp3 and 2008R2 SP2.  They work just fine.

But the updates for SBS 2011 are released separately because of the tight integration between all the components.

I suggest you test this thoroughly on a test system if possible.  It should be fine but SBS2011 gets their own special releases for SQL Server.
