Having trouble connecting using Odata

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

Hi,

I am having trouble connecting to Dynamics 365 for Financials via odata. I took a look at the documentation and I'm pretty sure the url is correct. Could someone please advise on what I should look at next? We are using a custom application that is trying to connect.

The username that we are inputting is the one found from searching Users -> selected_user -> User ID.

The password is the web service access key that is generated on that same screen.

The URL is in the format of "mybusiness.financials.dynamics.com/.../Company('CRONUS%20US')". I even tried it with a space instead of the %20.

This is off of the demo database that Dynamics provided. If someone can point me to the right documentation too, that would be helpful. I'm not sure why this would not be working.

It's highly unlikely that you're blocking that port unless you've specifically done so.  You should start a new thread with the details of your issue.  What you're trying to do specifically, what the error is and what you have done to try and mitigate the problem.  There are multiple problems listed in this thread and I'm not even sure which one you're referring to when you say you're having the "same problem".

    Thanks,

    Chris

    Chris,

Is there a way for me to check that? It's just me... No IT team to help. :)

    Thanks!

    Hello,

I worked with the original thread starter on a support case and we determined that their IT team had blocked port 7048.  This is what was causing the original problem that this thread was started for.

    Thanks,
    Chris

I'm very curious about the solution to this, as I ran into the same problem.

Using the Dynamics 365 for Financials Content Packs for Power BI has explicit instructions for connecting to Financials from PowerBI.  This instructions state "Delete any text after the company name in parenthesis." After following the listed steps PowerBI returns an "Unable to connect" error with the message "Details: 'The feed's metadata document appears to be invalid.'"

I tried using Postman to send a query but I get the same message. I have submitted a support ticket and will update this thread when a solution is resolved for future references.

You could check to see if you're able to query the Web Service using Excel or Power BI desktop.  In Excel you can just go to Data > Get Data > From other sources > From OData Feed.  Use Basic authentication with the credentials you've specified above and see if you can pull the data.  Same thing works in Power BI Desktop.

    Thanks,

    Chris

My pleasure. I'm fresh out of ideas (at least for now).

As a Dynamics 365 for Financials subscriber, you could open a formal support request from Microsoft by going to your Office 365 Admin portal, and clicking on Support in the menu on the left hand side, and following the steps to open a request.

First off, thank you AJ for the help!

    Unfortunately, this didn't work either.

    Hi again EChen,

I went back and looked at your URL and the standard ODATAv4 URL in Dynamics 365, and notice that your is missing the tenant id.

In my case, when I want to expose a Web Service called Items, here is my construct:

    ODATAv4.JPG

Here, my tenant id is 'interdyn', my company name 'NAVTeamCo', and as noted above, the Web Service is named 'Items'.

When I compare this the ODATAv4 URL you had pasted, you are missing the portion after the company name where it specifically references the Web Service name and re-lists the tenant information.

The last portion is likely because Dynamics 365 for Financials is a multi-tenant environment,

Please try again with this construct and let me know if that makes a difference.

If it resolves the issue, please take a moment and verify my response by clicking Yes next to "Did this answer your question?"
