We may dispose or sell a fixed asset.  How do we make the asset inactive?

You would retire the asset by going to (Transactions >> Fixed Assets >> Retire).  Sounds like  you need to be looking at the manual for Fixed Assets as well as some of the other manuals.  When you are in Great Plains you go to Alt+H and then go to Printable Manuals.  Under Financial is Fixed Assets and you can go into the section on Retirement and Disposal as well as transfers of assets.  It will give you the various options you can use when you retire/dispose/transfer.

If you aren't ready to retire the asset yet, create a Class ID and Account Group for Assets held for Sale. Transfer the asset to this class and set of accounts. Depreciation should be set to none since you typically don't depreciate assets held for sale.
