CRM 2015 Properties

Hello Experts,

We are doing a project in CRM 2015 on-premise. Have configured the product catalog and will be using the new "Product Properties" feature as it is a direct fit for the requirement. But our challenge is as below:

We are creating a custom entity, say "Project" in which I need to take input from the user which "Product" is referred in the project. This can be easily achieved by adding a Product lookup field in the Project entity. The challenge is how to get the properties of that selected product like (or similar to) it is done in the Product Line Item of the Opportunity. Each project will have ONLY one product mentioned and hence a grid is not required.

Can anyone guide me how can I achieve the above requirement. I want the user to select the product, specify the properties of the selected product mention the quantity and I will use this information to automatically create an opportunity record using SDK.

Any help appreciated.

AbD

    Hi,

The Dynamics Property feature is only available on the Opportunity, Quote and Order entity. Perhaps you could re-purpose one of these entities for your Project entity?

    Hope this helps,

    Scott

Thanks for the idea Scott. I may be able to re-purpose the opportunity entity as the projects are nothing but an opportunity. But is there any way we can restrict user from entering more than one product in the product line item? The requirement is each project will have only one associated project.

You would need to create a plugin to do this that runs oncreate of the opportunity detail line and checks if there is already an item.

For a no-code approach you could create a workflow that sets a flag on the opportunity on create of a line item and then stops with an error if the flag is already set.

How did you get on with this?

Thanks for the input Scott. I am thinking of the plugin-approach right now. Will update you once I get through

Hello Scott, followed your advise and re-purposed the opportunity entity to use as project. Thanks for the input.

Can you guide me how do I read the product properties value from the product line item (opportunityproductgrid). I want this information to be passed-on to another system which I will do using a plugin and web-services (of the target system). I am unable to understand how to retrieve the value as the opportunityproduct table does not have this value (or couldnt find atleast). I will need this information to be read using the plugin (hope this is possible).
