Receive Dynamics CRM Online backup file

Posted on by

A slight revision to my question from yesterday: Is it possible to obtain a copy of an on-demand backup of a Dynamics CRM Online Production environment without changing to on-premises or leaving the Microsoft Dynamics platform entirely?  I know that I can create an on-demand backup that I can then restore to a Sandbox environment in my online instance, and I know that I can get a backup of my online data from Microsoft if I wish to change to an on-premises environment or leave the Microsoft Dynamics fold, but can I obtain a copy of the SQL Server .bak file on a DVD or USB key or via a download link and still maintain my Dynamics CRM Online subscription? If so, is there a charge for this service, and is there any limit on how frequently I can do this?

    Hi Stan,

Below article explains how to migrate a Dynamics 365 Online instance to Dynamics 365 On-Premises instance.

The file extension would be .bak.  As long as the backup is valid, file extension shouldn't matter.

Regarding frequency, I believe there are limitations, even though, I haven't seen any actual number.  If you ask for one daily, I am sure they would say no :).  Below thread provides some insights.

I was sent to support.microsoft.com - the bot was useless and the site 404'd when I searched for the product name. I'm trying twitter as my last hope. I know it's possible, you just need the perseverance apparently.

    Hi Stan,

Thanks for noticing! I wanted to get to the bottom of this so I called myself. I've spoken to 6 different people so far in 6 departments and I'm still getting transferred around. I know it's technically possible to get a backup of your database but it may be impossible to get in touch with the right people to do it. I'll let you know if I have any luck.

    Thanks,

     Aiden

Hi Aiden. I see you frequently in the CRMUG daily digests. Unfortunately, the article doesn't really answer my question, because it does not specify the format in which the .bak file will be delivered, whether or not there is a cost for the service, or whether or not there is a limit to how frequently this can be done.

    Hi Stan,

This is a little order article and may no longer apply, but it describes how you'd obtain a SQL copy of your online instance by going through Live Customer Support. msdn.microsoft.com/.../hh127043.aspx

Hope this helps! I'd appreciate if you'd mark this as Answering your question.

    Thanks,

     Aiden
